7. That's pretty much an unheard of movement
I'd like to see some additional confirmation but if true, that is mind boggling.

21. Source seems to be a news conference
Update 2:42 p.m. EST:

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck off the west coast of Honshu, but it's not clear yet if it's related to the 8.9 magnitude quake. There have been about 100 aftershocks of magnitude 5 or greater since the mainshock, according to the USGS. At a press conference, scientists said the entire island of Honshu moved eastward by 8 feet (2.3 m).

14. How powerful was the Chilean earthquake?
That one moved the Earth's axis. I've been wondering all day if something similar would result from this one.

17. Large ones usually do
That we notice it is more the fact that we can measure things that precisely than anything else, though. It's not like it rolled the planet twelve degrees or anything; just a tiny fraction of one.

Moving Honshu eight feet is more mindboggling.

20. Here is info on Chilean earthquake a year ago

updated 3/9/2010 1:00:57 PM ET 2010-03-09T18:00:57

The massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Chile more than a week ago moved the city of Concepción at least 10 feet (3 meters) to the west, seismological measurements indicate.

The violent temblor — the fifth most powerful quake ever measured — shifted other parts of South America as well, from the Falkland Islands (located just east of the southern tip of South America) to Fortaleza, Brazil, situated on that country's northern coast.

The quake occurred off the coast of the Maule region of Chile in one of Earth's seismic hotspots where the Nazca tectonic plate is squeezed under, or subducted below, the neighboring South American plate. Tension builds up as the plates move against each other, and earthquakes such as the one that struck Chile on Feb. 27 relieve these pent-up stresses.

------------------

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina and across the continent from the quake's epicenter, moved about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) to the west. Chile's capital, Santiago, moved about 11 inches (28 cm) to the west-southwest. The cities of Valparaiso and Mendoza, Argentina, northeast of Concepción, also moved significantly.

In seriousness, isn't a lot of Honshu "reclaimed" ocean floor, or did I make that up?

12. It is likely that the earthquake has had other global consequences.
The 8.8 quake in Chile last year shifted the Earth's axis by about eight centimeters and sped up its rotation, making a day shorter by a little over a microsecond.
