Solid Dairy - Scuba's day in MadTown (warning: lotsa pics)

Fellow DU'ers,

Today I had the great priviledge of joining like minded people in Madison, Wisconsin to protest the attempted destruction of Unions by Governor Scott Walker and the Republican-controlled government. It was an uplifting day as I met decent, hard-working people from all over the midwest who were there to support the rights of workers to bargain collectively.

I arrived early (as promised) and was ready with my sign (see pics) and even got a chance to use the "speaker's mic". Like everyone else, I cautioned the assembled throng to make sure the gathering remained peaceful, then spent a few more minutes railing against poverty and the manipulative billionaires who are causing one in four American children to grow up in poverty today. There were other, more interesting speakers too (see pics).

I'm no expert at estimating crowd size, but I'd guess multiple tens of thousands showed up to decry the mean spirited actions of our Republican-controlled government. I can count the number of Scott Walker supporters I saw on one hand - with four fingers left over. He was an obvious plant, screaming viciously in his attempt to provoke Union members. Cheeseheads being smarter, we ignored him which seemed to cause him great distress. Perhaps the Kochs (or Dick Armey or Carl Rove) only pays him if he starts a brawl.

Upon arrival I found the Square to be almost deserted.



By 9:30 a fair size crowd had gathered on this cool (30 degree) morning.



Reverend Jackson spoke.



Hizzoner da (former) Mayor Paul Soglin spoke.

Break for lunch. Bonus points if you know where the "House Sandwich" is a juicy burger with bacon and a fried egg on top. Hey, I did have the salad in lieu of the fries.

We ate there three nights in a row last week. 1/2 price ($2.00!) tap beers at happy hour! Good selection of beers, and good burgers, too!

In my defense, I have never bought a lake cottage, prime, northern or any other kind...and my folks moved to WI while I was in grad school and have been there ever since. My dad still lives in West Bend.

I think I may make an FIB sign.
