Former Gov. Buddy Roemer forms presidential exploratory committee

BATON ROUGE -- Former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer announced today that he's forming an exploratory committee to consider whether to seek the 2012 Republican nomination for president.

A former Bossier City congressman who served a single term in the Governor's Mansion before finishing third in the 1991 primary behind David Duke and Edwin Edwards as he sought re-election, Roemer said he would not accept donations over $100 and would not take money from political action committees.

With little name recognition outside Louisiana, Roemer would enter the race as a long-shot candidate in a field that is expected to include well-known national figures such as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
