The psycho-emotional impacts of immigration on children
Culture shock, role reversals, traumas from being torn from their parents by ICE raids, internalized anger: these are among some of the pychological issues that many children of Latino immigrants are being affected by. Because oftentimes many of these immigrant families have had very little or no access at all to healthcare either here in the U.S. or at their countries of origin, these are issues that are hardly ever recognized, let alone addressed or treated by professionals. Not surprisingly, these topics are hardly ever being talked about in our Spanish language media, let alone in the English language media outlets. A new book, "Listen to the Children, Conversations with Immigrant Families", seeks to address these important topics.

1. Kids of all law-breakers suffer greatly
When Mom and/or Dad get arrested for any crime, the first innocent victims are the children. :(

Just one more reason people should come here legally, instead of expecting to cut in line in front of all the other people going through the proper channels.

From a historical perspective, the vast majority of adults and children who arrived on our shores during the 1800's faced similar psychological problems. Things were much worse back then. Kids who spoke no English got their hands smacked with rulers if they spoke their native tongue. Irish kids were treated like human filth. And so on, ad nauseum. Culture shock and the trials of adjusting to a new society have been around as long as people have come to America.

It's just that these problems are made worse, when people knowingly subject their children to these risks by not obeying the law (and I apply that statement to all law-breakers, not just people coming here illegally).
