Our actions here may actually help more in other states than it does for us, but you need to try and hold the line somewhere. This clearly highlights the importance of Democrats getting out to vote for every election and not conceding it to the Republicans for whatever reason.

No. That's not what I was saying at all.

What I was saying is that on Sept 15, 2008, according to state-by-state polls, McCain had enough EVs to win the presidency. Remember, this was less than a few weeks away from the election. Following the Republican Convention, voters were breaking towards him and Palin. A lot of folks, on our side of the aisle, thought we had lost our chance to end the GOP reign in the White House.

19. We Progressives have history on our side.

The Republicans don't know history at all.

Following both the crashes -- 1893 and 1929, Republicans tried to reduce government expenditures. The depressions got worse each time.

But in the aftermath of the crashes, as the economy worsened, progressive movements emerged, very strong progressive movements that just spontaneously united working people and small farmers. Those progressive movements elected Teddy Roosevelt (who was not progressive on military or foreign policy issues) and FDR (who was not progressive on many issues by our standards today) who was followed by a couple of progressive presidents.

A lot of DUers compare what is happening in Wisconsin to the war protestors in the 1960s. I believe that is inaccurate.

The Wisconsin movement is an expression of common economic interests at a time of economic distress. The Wisconsin movement will inspire movements outside of Wisconsin in certain states and be much more inclusive, more focused on economic issues. Ironically, it is likely to result in societal changes that are not just political.

This movement is likely to lead to cooperative endeavors with economic impact for the people involved in them as well as traditional political action.

I expect people to start shopping cooperatives in which, in exchange for their work, they get lower prices and save on the cost of paying store employees. These cooperatives probably won't be very well organized or very intentional to begin with. It will just be friends or family helping each other out.

This would combine well with the current movement toward health foods and organic products. One person picks strawberries on Saturday at a local strawberry farm while another person buys some other food. They exchange food either using dollars or simply trading. I can see this sort of thing happening more often. Farmers' markets will probably also proliferate as will more and more use of used things and wearing and using things for longer times.

We are headed for an even deeper recession in my opinion. And people will compensate and cope. Big business will have to cope too. It should get interesting. Socially, some people will drop out, but those who build strong communities, strong family ties will be OK. And the people who are pretty prosperous but remain stubbornly right-wing may have a lot of trouble adjusting to the new reality.

Happened in the past and will happen again.

It will get a lot worse before the pain gets bad enough to wake Americans up. They can't avoid the looming rapid crash like they have been with schemes and distractions. How many years is the question for me.
