I think that might be the way the DISQUS commenting plugin works. It tallies "likes" but does not tally "unlikes". However, I believe if you accidentally "upfist" a thingy you can reverse it by clicking the "downfist" icon.

People resort to comment systems like DISQUS because blog comments are infested with dirty filthy spammers. With my blog, I don't do DISQUS or IntenseDebate. Instead, I have my comments set up so that anyone that includes even one hyperlink in their reply gets sent to the moderation queue - that is, when my blog is running as an actual blog as opposed to a live Twitter thang. :hi:
