We're getting poorer
Poverty in Highlands County
Census data: We're getting poorer

He has no health insurance, and he's been turned down once for Security Supplemental Income. He's applying again. However, Holloway is destitute, so he lives in a neighbor's unheated, open-to-the-weather shed with another homeless man.

Holloway returns the favor by raking acorns from their lawn and helps around their house. He lives on monthly food boxes from the Salvation Army and the Free Will Baptist Church.

"If it wasn't for them," Holloway said, referring to his hosts, Jim and Sara, "I'd be living out in the woods."

Actually, he was. Aware that Holloway was camping in a tent, they cleaned out a place in their barn, but no matter which direction the weather came from, the Quonset hut became an unbearable wind tunnel. The storage shed was better. At least now, he gets away from the mosquitoes.

4. I know, it's sad. But a gleam of hope - people helping the homeless, letting 2 live in their shed
that's what we'll need to do as things get worse. Help each other.
