Dem congressman's mental health questioned because he wore a tiger suit

SALEM, Ore. – A photo of Rep. David Wu wearing a tiger costume and other unusual revelations about his mental health are increasing pressure on the seven-term Oregon Democrat to step down.

But the lawmaker says he's not quitting even as an editorial in one of the state's largest newspapers and the state Republican chairman called for his resignation.

Wu said this week that it was "unprofessional and inappropriate" to send pictures of himself wearing a tiger costume to staff members while he was in the middle of a heated campaign last year. He also acknowledged taking two tablets of a pain killer that were given to him by an unnamed campaign donor.

1. What was the context of the tiger suit?

I'd have to know the context to decide if it was inappropriate, or not.

As for the pills...I'm sure he's not the only person, politician or not, to take something offered by someone he knew.

I don't really know enough about his current situation to offer an opinion, but I do know this:

Allen Alley can put HIS opinion, and recommendation, right where it belongs: where the sun doesn't shine.

I'd rather see Alley resign.

3. It's a lot worse than the tiger suit.

The problem is, the guy is an arrogant jerk who hasn't accomplished anything and he's been in office sine 1999!

He's not my congressman, but he's in a district adjacent to mine.

There is a concerted effort by the Oregonian newspaper to take this guy out. I happen to believe that Wu is a shitty and ineffective back bencher who will never amount to anything, but I also think the charges against him are overinflated. There's no law against being a putz. Everyone has an embarrassing photo moment somewhere.

If he is forced out, I won't miss him at all. He is an embarrassment. But he votes right most of the time. In Oregon's First District, we may well get a true progressive style Democrat more like Peter DeFazio or Earl Blumenauer.
