Recall drives EVERYWHERE
Edited on Sun Feb-27-11 11:57 AM by drm604
While we're stirred up. While the public is energized and on our side. In every district where we can win - where we would have won if people had voted - we should mount recall drives for every Republican who is eligible for recall.

Is that possible? Can we do that?

Edited to add: Can we register new voters for recalls?

Edited again to add: This includes on the federal level!

2. We need the recall documents FILED as much as we need signatures
We need people in the districts to do the things needed to get the filings done.

If interested see this PDF

http://elections.state.wi.us/docview.asp?docid=14632&locid=47

Once the filing is made, there are two months to get the total number of signatures required...

And the number of signatures required will vary because they are based on numbers of votes in the election of the target of the recall.

3. The voters are no prize either. Can we recall *them*?
Someone... might have been Barney Frank... pointed this out a few years ago.

5. We should do it where we can.
My understanding is that there are something like 8 Republican senators in Wisconsin who can be recalled. That's a good place to start.

6. Only 18 states have recall laws, and some of them ...
require actual malfeasance (i.e., a crime--not just political disagreement) to trigger possible recall. Illinois recently voted in a recall provision, so it may be 19 now.

Only two governors have ever been recalled: Gray Davis in CA 2003, and the governor of North Dakota in 1921.

I personally do not believe in recalls and think they are dangerous. Short of their having committed a crime, we should find other ways (such as protests and political pressure) to oppose an elected official's policies. You all need to think about the tables being turned: recall efforts to unseat governors who support abortion rights or labor rights or any number of other policies we advocate. It could happen.

7. Walker can't be recalled for one year after taking office.
We're going to have to wait a little bit on this one. WI just needs to keep the pot simmering.

8. My understanding is that there are 8 Wisconsin Republican Senators who can be recalled.
According to Wikipedia, the current composition of the Wisconsin Senate is 19 Republicans and 14 Democrats.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin_Senate#Composition

If we could replace 3 of those Republicans with Democrats it would then be 16 Republicans and 17 Democrats.

9. Yes. Three of them come from tight district
and they would be most easily influenced by recalls.

There are many facebook pages, but it is unclear if anyone has stepped forward to file the required recall documents for any WI-R sen other than Alberta Darling.

The WI 14 are currently losing on this front.

11. We need an elector (voter) from each district...
I am not. I very much wish I were because I'd go forward.

My WI sen got elected this past round.

12. How many of the
democrats will be recalled and loose their seats for not showing up to work when this process starts? I am not sure this is a battle we want to fight.

We are therefore forced to engage.

16. To be honest, ever since the recall of Gov. Davis (CA) which got us Arnold,
I'm a little leery of the process in general and unintended consequences. I'm hoping for some long term movements / coalitions to come out of this. Some larger turnouts in elections up and down the tickets, local, state and federal. More ongoing participation at all levels. Just not sure recalls are the answer. As I said, I'm skittish about them given what happened here in CA. :hi:
