Midwife Supporters Outraged; Investigators Explain Arrest


CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Supporters of a midwife arrested over the weekend in Charlotte are outraged. Many sounded off through e-mails to the Eyewitness newsroom in her defense.

Emily "Amy" Medwin is a certified professional midwife and is educated in home and out-of-hospital births.

However, Medwin is now being investigated in two counties because her certifications do not meet state guidelines.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said Medwin acted as a midwife during a home birth in east Charlotte over the weekend. A captain said, at some point during the birth, someone at the home called for Medic and rushed a newborn boy to Carolinas Medical Center.

While investigating, CMPD officers learned Medwin was wanted on a warrant out of Rowan County for unauthorized practice of midwifery.
