"We have Plan A, Plan B, Plan C. Plan A is to live and die in Libya. Plan B is to live and die in Libya. Plan C is to live and die in Libya." - Saif Islam Qaddafi during interview

I called this Day 10 because the official kick off day was #Feb17 but the kickoff was 2 days early and today is in reality day 12.

Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

But I underestimated them in the beginning, they took Libya so quickly. It's Tripoli that has been giving them the biggest problems, and it could still be quite a few days before popular uprising happens there. But they'll get there, I think.

Libya: The Left Party is always on the side of citizens' revolution

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2011 9:11 P.M.

...

The Left Party is at the side of revolution citizens and supports the struggle of the Libyan people for their freedom. No power is legitimate to shoot his peuple. We applaud the "releases" shouted by the people of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya as we supported the "what Vayana todos" South America.

Everywhere we condemn the dictatorial regimes often supported by U.S. power and support the citizens' revolution today that raise the Libyan Arab people, especially facing a massacre. We also remain vigilant about the real intentions of the European countries and the United States and Libya in the region.

(Laughs) How are you Gadafi? How are you? How are you, O long-lived one, may your life be shortened soon. How are your children, Gadafi? I see you today in this speech trembling. Why are you trembling, Gadafi? I see your eyes, I see your twitches. Why? What have you taken, cocaine, heroin or what, pills, steroids? First they had no effect on your trembling, and then they did and you were strengthened. This cocaine, it gives you strength, take some more. Take another hit. It’s cheap on the market now. Come on. Take some more.

This is what will make you victorious. Just how are you going to be victorious, how? Black, black days are coming at you. Black as your dyed hair. Your days are numbered. The Libyan people will take their revenge, woe upon you from this nation, they will tear you apart, they will turn you into minced meat. They will eat you, butcher you and your children. These are your last days. And you claim that you are strong.

Where is your strength? In these days, your intestines are all tangled up. How often do you rush to the toilet, Gadafi? How often? Or do you carry it with you? Are you wearing diapers? They are waiting for you Gadafi. We’ve heard you’re good at escaping. Where are you going to escape, Gadafi? The whole nation is after you. 6 million people are rushing at you. They will eat you. How are they going to divide you up in 6 million? Every one tear off a gram. The nation will grind you into meat. God abandon you, God abandon you. Woe upon you of this hungry nation who will eat you. Sleep, sleep, try to sleep. We will meet very soon, Gadafi. Wake up in hell, Gadafi. (Play on "good night," literally: wake up well)

Volunteerism and pulling together in Eastern Libya
Posted on February 26, 2011 by admin

This article writes that US officials are struggling to understand the situation as it is developing. A major concern everywhere is that the country will erupt into civil war after Gaddafi’s regime.

However, Eastern Libya tells a different tale. Umm Ahmen, head of the management committee for Benghazi’s new transitional city council tells Washington not to worry.

“Yes, there are no police, no institutions. Law and order as defined doesn’t exist,” she says. “But in practice, Benghazi is incredibly safe. Safer than it was under Qaddafi. People are all volunteering, the banks are opening. We surprised even ourselves.”

42. Very revealing and enlightening. Where there is true solidarity,
society is self-organizing. There is no need for any big bosses or slave drivers cracking the whip and saying "do this or else." People see what needs to be done and they do it. I think I've just become an anarchist!

The big challenge for the Libyan people, and the reason there will be a need for laws in the near future, is to prevent remnants of Gaddafi's regime from re-asserting the old tyranny without Gaddafi. But I'm sure they don't need me to tell them that. If there is a real power vacuum for a week or so, they are actually in a better position than Egypt. It gives them a chance to start off with a clean slate.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi: The new face of Libyan defiance
Colonel Gaddafi's son was educated in London and has friends in the City and Westminster. Or he did until last week

Geneva places a high premium on guarding secrets, but rumours are a different currency. Amid momentous scenes being played out across the Middle East last week, sources in the Swiss financial centre were privately gossiping about a visit to Geneva earlier this year by Farhat Bengdara, the governor of the Central Bank of Libya.

According to one popular rumour, Bengdara had visited Geneva with a purpose. He was there to make changes to key Swiss accounts, into which flow hundreds of millions of dollars of Libyan oil money that are then allocated to the Libyan Investment Authority and the Libyan Central Bank.

Financiers in Geneva gossip that, as far back as 17 January, Bengdara established that four new names would be added as signatories on three crucial accounts controlling much of the money. The signatories were Colonel Muammar Gaddafi; his son Khamis, who heads Libya's infamous martyrs' battalion; the Libyan leader's daughter Aisha; and his son Saif al-Islam.

...

Rothschild's son and heir, Nat, also a close friend of Mandelson, held a party in New York attended by Saif in 2008. Saif in turn invited Nat Rothschild to his 37th birthday party in Montenegro, where the financier is investing in a luxury resort.

Prince Andrew, too, has played host to Saif at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle and the two men have also met in Tripoli. Others whom Saif classes as good friends include Tony Blair and, bizarrely, the late Austrian far-right leader, Jörg Haider.

Libya’s information walls come tumbling down
Posted on February 26, 2011 by admin
In this day and age it is almost impossible to stop information from getting out. But Gaddafi’s regime has certainly tried. However, earlier this week journalists were invited into the capital to show that all is normal.

When some reporters broke away from their minders, however, it was clear that the situation in the city was not completely under control.

Blocks of cities were seen where revolts happened out in the open, and eyewitnesses spoke of snipers, anti-aircraft guns and the dead and wounded being removed from hospitals.

This is a second article about journalists in Tripoli, read it here

Libya's information walls come tumbling down
Posted By Blake Hounshell Saturday, February 26, 2011 - 2:31 PM

Earlier this week, Seif had invited foreign journalists to the Libyan capital so they could see for themselves just how wonderfully the Qaddafis were handling what he downplayed as the work of foreign-backed, pill-popping Al Qaeda terrorists bent on Libya's destruction.

But correspondents for both Al Arabiya and the New York Times, two news outlets that took up his invitation, managed to break away for their minders and report that all was not, in fact, under control.

The Times' David Kirkpatrick "discovered blocks of the city in open revolt" and spoke with eyewitnesses who told of "snipers and antiaircraft guns firing at unarmed civilians, and security forces were removing the dead and wounded from streets and hospitals, apparently in an effort to hide the mounting toll." Al Arabiya reported that Qaddafi's security forces appeared to be abandoning Tripoli's streets to the rebels. And the Associated Press relayed word that the Libyan regime "passed out guns to civilian supporters, set up checkpoints Saturday and sent armed patrols roving the terrorized capital."

...

Perhaps he (Saif)thought that the regime really could control the flow of information, present a cleaned-up Potemkin village inside the capital, and earn some goodwill from foreign news organizations by appearing to be cooperative. But nobody's buying the spin, and newspapers and satellite channels have become extremely sophisticated in how they leverage citizen networks in difficult reporting environments. Libyans inside the country are still, miraculously, risking their lives to take gritty cell-phone videos and upload them to Facebook or other social networking sites, where Libyan exiles pick them up, translate and provide context, and pass them along to a broader audience. Activists and journalists have been using tools like Skype to communicate directly with sources in and around Tripoli, and then spreading the news quickly on Twitter.

Al Hurra was descredited once as a news source. I'm asking how reliable it is and how reliable this story is because the same trick was tried in Tunisia and Egypt.

Italy Suspends 'Friendship' Treaty With Libya
FEBRUARY 26, 2011, 4:24 P.M. ET
BY NATHANIA ZEVI AND STACY MEICHTRY

ROME—Italy has suspended a treaty that forbids it from participating in any military action against the regime of Col. Moammar Gadhafi, according to Italy's defense minister, making it easier for Rome to participate in any potential peace-keeping mission to the North African country.

"The treaty is de-facto no longer operational," Defense Minister Ignazio La Russa said in a phone interview on Saturday. Mr. La Russa said Italy no longer considered the treaty enforceable, because the popular uprising in Libya had weakened Col. Moammar Gadhafi's regime to the point that it could no longer uphold its end of the accord.

...

As part of that sweeping accord, Italy agreed to refrain form "direct or indirect" use of military force against the Libyan government. The accord also forbids Italy from "allowing the use of its territory in any hostile act against Libya."

Some analysts have questioned whether the treaty would prevent Italy from participating in potential peace-keeping missions in Libya—or as a potential staging ground for forces of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO.

They're cooking something up and the Libyan people aren't going to like it one bit. Don't do it. Just do what they asked. No fly zone, freeze accounts, ban travel and ICC

Australia imposing tough Libya sanctions
Updated 26 minutes ago

Foreign Affairs Minister Kevin Rudd has urged the UN Security Council to administer similar sanctions. (Reuters: Suhaib Salem)

The Federal Government has imposed sanctions on Libya, as UN Security Council diplomats clash over a proposal to refer the deadly crackdown against anti-government demonstrators to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Foreign Affairs Minister Kevin Rudd announced travel and financial sanctions against Libyan leader Moamar Gaddafi and key members of his regime, in a bid to halt attacks on its people.

The 22 figures include members of Mr Gaddafi's family, senior military and security people. The Government also banned the listed people from entering or transiting Australian territory.

Under the sanctions, Australians would not be able to engage in any financial transactions with the 22 figures.

Libyan envoy urges UN to save Libya
The UN chief and Libya's entire team of envoys at the world body urges the Security Council to act quickly.
Last Modified: 26 Feb 2011 01:28 GMT

The Security Council has met to consider a draft sanctions resolution calling for an end to Libya violence

...

Abdurrahman Mohamed Shalgham, Libyan ambassador to United Nations, who has defected, made an emotional plea before the UN to save Libya.

"Please, the United Nations, save Libya. Let there be no bloodshed, no killing of innocents. We want a decisive, rapid and courageous resolution from you," Shalgham told the Security Council on Friday.

...

The six-page draft, obtained by Reuters, calls for an end to the violence and says "the widespread and systematic attacks currently taking place in Libya against the civilian population may amount to crimes against humanity."

The draft also calls for an arms embargo against Libya as well as travel bans and asset freezes for top Libyan leaders

...and they were talking to a guy standing in a crowd in the middle of Tripoli. All of a sudden, you hear gunfire erupt, and the interviewer, I can't remember who it was, started asking "are you in a safe place right now?" and he was like, "I'm standing out in the open in the middle of a bunch of people. I drove all the way home with my hand over my mouth, hoping that the dude was OK. It scared me just listening to it.
