Okay, so it hasn't snowed in San Francisco since 1978. That has to be historic right? I have been watching the temperatures fall all night from 41 down to 38 degrees, and watching the radar screen on sfgate.com checking for clouds to pass over my area. Plus someone managed to snag some video of it in the city..and it was at this link:
http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/breaking/San_Francisco_Snow__Chief_Meteorologist_Jeff_Ranieri_Tracks_First_Flakes___Freeze_Warning__Bay_Area-116971963.htmlAfter seeing the video, I would have loved to know where that was shot, because it certainly wasn't close to where I live. I have been running in and out of the house all night, hoping to catch a few moments of falling flakes, but there was absolutely nothing!
Now I didn't expect it to dump on us, like it does in Utah. (Once I saw three feet of snow fall there in less then two hours! Big clumpy flaky stuff!)But I would have liked to have been able to say, "Hey! I saw snow here!" and taken a few snaps from my cellphone camera. But no... And its more then likely this will be a rare event that only happens once in a blue moon. Hell, for all I know, I might be 90 years old by the time the next snow fall happens here in the city.
"Why the big deal?" You are probably asking yourself. I know a lot of you probably live in areas of the country where it just constantly snows all the time in winter, and besides, as I have admitted its not the first time I have ever experienced being in snow. Its just that probably the last time I saw snow was over 10 years ago while going up to Reno with my folks, and the bus driver had to get out and put chains on the tires so we could safely pass though some snow storm gantlet into Nevada.
Heres the thing. It never snows in San Francisco. I have lived here most my life, and frankly I was 4 years old when it last snowed here. I don't even remember it. So to see that white stuff float down in this city is as rare as seeing the Comet Halle Boppe (which I did.)fly over.
Saturday the weather will go back up into the 50s, with maybe low 40's at night. Who knows why the jet stream pushed an Alaskan cold front this far south into California. But, it won't likely happen again for a long, long time. Its kinda disappointing to miss something as rare as this. Yeah it could happen again, but not very soon.
Anyway to those of you who live in California and got to actually see this, consider yourselves lucky. On the other hand...
I guess I can be content to say, I have seen some rare things happen in my life; A live volcano, a breaching whale, a UFO, a major earthquake, a major flood, a mud slide, a Comet fly bye, The Giants wining the World Series, The 49ers winning the Super Bowl (several times), And an African-American become President...
Maybe this snow was not such a big deal...after all.
Okay...Now I feel better.
