"We have Plan A, Plan B, Plan C. Plan A is to live and die in Libya. Plan B is to live and die in Libya. Plan C is to live and die in Libya." - Saif Islam Qaddafi during interview

I called this Day 10 because the official kick off day was #Feb17 but the kickoff was 2 days early and today is in reality day 12.

Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

Iraq cracks down on media; violations in Yemen, Libya

...

Security forces prohibited cameras from entering Baghdad's Tahrir Square, where there were thousands of people protesting, according to news reports and local journalists. Police confiscated tapes that reporters managed to shoot in the square, according to Al-Jazeera.

Al-Jazeera reported that dozens of journalists were detained in central Baghdad today. Four journalists for Iraqi news outlets, Husam Serail, a reporter for Al-Sabah newspaper, Ali Abdul Sada, a reporter for Al-Mada newspaper, Hadi al-Mahdi, an anchor for Radio Demozy, and Ali Sumerian, an editor for Al-Sabah, were arrested, according to news reports. They were taken to an unknown location, local journalists told Al-Sumaria News website. The journalists said "a military force raided Al-Taraf restaurant in downtown Baghdad and arrested the four journalists after beating them."

Military and security forces detained Al-Sumaria News photographers Ali Jasem and Safa Hatim, and correspondents Sinan Adan and Idriss Jawad while they were covering demonstrations in Baghdad, according to Al-Sumaria News. Anti-riot forces also raided the offices of Al-Diyar satellite TV station in Baghdad and detained 10 of its staff members for three hours, according to Al-Diyar's website. In the afternoon, anti-riot police stormed the office for a second time, prohibited the staff from entering the building, and detained at least three more employees.

...

In Libya, foreign journalists entering the country from Tunisia tweeted that their cameras, hard drives, and SIM cards were confiscated by border patrol guards. Paul Danahar, a BBC journalist reporting from Tunisia-Libya border, said that Suresh Kothia, "an Indian who just arrived from Libya," told him that "at the last checkpoint the Libyan army took everyone's phone SIM cards and computer hard drives to stop images of the uprising getting out." Kothia told Danahar that equipment was broken and thrown to the ground.

Damage severe, will take days to fix
Bombing shuts down Iraq's largest oil refinery

Saturday, 26 February 2011

Baiji, IRAQ (Agencies)
Militants attacked and shut down Iraq's largest oil refinery on Saturday, killing four workers and setting off bombs near production units that started a raging fire, officials said.

The militants planted explosives at kerosene and benzene units at the refinery in the town of Baiji, a former al-Qaeda stronghold about 180 km (112 miles) north of Baghdad, the governor of Salahuddin province, Ahmed al-Jubouri, said.

"The refinery has completely stopped," Jubouri told Reuters. "It's a big loss for the whole country. All Iraqi cities depend on its production."

The blast, which happened before dawn, sparked a fire that was later brought under control, a police source said. It took about five hours and up to 50 fire trucks to contain the blaze.

Let’s Assure Free Passage From Libya

By NICHOLAS KRISTOF

...

That should be a no-brainer for us. Why can’t NATO announce a safe passage route for planes and ships that are disobeying Qaddafi orders? I’d like to see us all go further and announce a no-fly zone and a no-sail zone, but a safe passage corridor for elements in the Libyan military is a start.

Look, there’s probably nothing we can do to convince Qaddafi and his sons not to fight to the end. So that makes it essential that we try to peel away as much of his military force as possible, and there are signs that that is very feasible. I’ve heard an estimate that only 10 percent of the Libyan military officers are really with Qaddafi: the rest aren’t necessarily against him, but just don’t want to pick sides.

...

Then in Tajura, about 10 miles from Tripoli, thousands of people gathered and began marching on Tripoli to demand that Qaddafi leave, according to a man from Tajura. But as they approached they were fired on directly with machine guns. Many injured, and an unknown number of fatalities. The injured in these shootings face the added problem that they can’t be taken to Tripoli hospitals, because there have been credible reports of police going to the hospitals and executing or kidnapping patients seeking treatment for injuries inflicted by security forces.

One question I don’t know the answer to: Does Libya have chemical or biological weapons that are unaccounted for? As rebels raid weapons depots around the country and help themselves, is there a risk of sarin nerve gas becoming available on the international black market?

Libyan protester killed in Al-Hani district by Khamis Brigade 25/2/11
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owbrz2nVjUo

In Tripoli, 25/2/11, protesters marched after Friday prayers from Tajoura towards the Green Square. In Al-Hani they were intercepted by mercenaries and Khamis brigade troops, who fired into the crowd with anti-aircraft guns. This is one of the fallen. Protesters immediately carried his body away, lest it be snatched by Gaddafi's clean-up crew, who showed up to remove any signs of bloodshed.

Press Release - Who are Anonymous & What Anonymous represents! http://bit.ly/eNX2Vb Let there be no confusion.

Just now, Anonymous hackers Release a new press note for the people of world. The words are as given below :

Dear Citizens of the World.

There has been some confusion among the media about who/what anonymous is/represents. There have also been questions asked about the input from Anonymous during the current global revolution.

Anonymous is an online pool of consciousness, sometimes we create a force towards a similar direction which could manifest in revolution. Anonymous has NO leader. We are one. We are many. One does not speak for many. Many do not speak for all. No one speaks for all. We come from all walks of life. All age, race, sex, places. We have no ideologies. We have every ideology imaginable. We have no goals. We have every goal imaginable. To understand Anonymous would be to understand our universe. Anonymous can not be labelled, blamed or made a scapegoat. To blame Anonymous would be to blame the citizens of the world. There is no discrimination in Anonymous unless you do not have an internet connection. We do not work with post.

No one speaks for Anonymous. Nothing is official. No videos. No operations. Not even this press release, even though it was created by an Anonymous number of Anonymous at an Anonymous time in an Anonymous place and uploaded Anonymously, it does not speak for Anonymous.

At this current time the worldwide events have attracted the attention of many Anonymous. We are shocked. We have witness the violation of human rights, basic human freedoms, media manipulation and unlawful government scare tactics and genocide. Anonymous is everywhere. We see everything. We never sleep, while one side of the world slumber the other awakens. We are active, always.

We do not take sides, we do not believe in sides. We are not followers. We are our own leaders on our own journey. Many Anonymous uphold the law of the land, human rights and freedom of speech, but we are many. We can not speak for all. We know that the following countries Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bahrain, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Honduras, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Tunisia, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America, Venezuela and Yemen are under protest and are watching them. We are with them. We are them. Where the weak stand together to demand freedom we will stand with them. We are not terrorists. We are freedom fighters, helping to give voices to the voiceless.

We are more than you think. Trying to stop Anonymous is like trying to stop a tsunami with a surfboard, to try to hit a lighting bolt with an umbrella, to douse a fire away with petrol, or to fist fight the earth.

The time has come for the people of the world to unite. You can not wait for a revolution. You are the revolution. We are the revolution. Our strength is in numbers. The time is now. Every time you decide not to exercise your rights, every time you do not deny ignorance, every time you give your money to a corporate business you are contributing to the oppression of the human race. Anonymous is calling for your help. The people of the world are calling for your help.

We do it because we can. We do it for the future, of our children and all life on this planet. We do it because we see lies and deceit. We do it because every digital account is fuelled with the strength of human emotion, but mostly we do it for the lulz.

Anonymous are the people. The people are Anonymous. Now you can be Anonymous.

Join us.

We do not forget.
We do not forgive.
We are legion.
Expect us.

US advised to avoid land wars

Defence secretary underscores importance of Iraq and Afghan lessons but cautions against future involvement.
Last Modified: 26 Feb 2011 09:55 GMT

Gates, who has said he will leave office this year, predicts that future conflicts will look radically different

...

"The army has made a painful war-driven transition from a force designed to face off against other large militaries to a more nimble service that trains other armies and takes on nation-building even as it hunts insurgents," Gates said.

"It must better prepare itself to continue to face such unconventional threats and unorthodox duties in the future."

...

As the Iraq war began to wind down, he and the Obama administration ordered another surge this time into Afghanistan, where they are battling entrenched uprisings in the south and east.

Future high-end conflicts involving the US military are more likely to be fought with air and sea power instead of large ground forces such as the one that invaded Iraq in 2003 and the one in Afghanistan, he said.

Russia warns Libyan authorities will be prosecuted

Fri Feb 25, 2011 3:23pm GMT

MOSCOW Feb 25 (Reuters) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev condemned on Friday the use of force against civilians in Libya and warned that Libyan authorities would face prosecution under international law if they did not stop the violence.

...

"We strongly call on the current Libyan authorities ... to show restraint, and not allow a worsening of the situation and the killing of civilians," he said in a statement on the Kremlin's website. "If they do not, such actions will qualify as crimes carrying all the consequences of international law."

The U.N. Security Council, of which Russia is a member, plans to meet Friday to receive a French-British draft proposal for sanctions against Libyan leaders over the deadly attacks on demonstrators there, council envoys said.

Armed people came out of the ambulance and started shooting at the people. I can't explain the feeling how it was. I was terrified. I mean, an ambulance."

Back on home soil after escaping the turmoil in Libya, Bosnian evacuees received a rapturous reception from loved ones at Sarajevo airport.

But, amid the emotional reunions, expats had chilling accounts of the horror they had left behind.

Jasmin Ibragic, who was working 10 kilometres from Tripoli, said it is not true that 1,000 people have died. He insists 5,000 have been killed, including 590 in just one overnight bombing.

...

A private performance wasn’t anything new to the Qaddafi family; only a year earlier Mutassem Gaddafi, older brother of Hannibal, hosted a similar gathering, then inviting music superstar Mariah Carey to perform. Like Beyoncé, Carey was largely compensated for her work, but received a comparatively “smaller” sum of one million dollars for this party.

Colonel Gaddafi has brought in celebrities of his own as well. In 2006, Lionel Richie gave a concert to mark the 20th anniversary of a bombing raid by the US over Libya. The dictator’s sanity is reflected in his choice of song; “Do It To Me One More Time” to remember the fifteen people killed in the bombing.

So what are these musicians thinking now after the recent events unfolding in Libya? Some people believe they should return the money to the Libyan people in the form of aid, as it’s said to be blood money stolen by Gaddafi in the first place. Some ponder whether a public statement expressing their regret for accepting the money is enough.

...

Despite where the money came from, none of these celebrities have yet made a statement. A representative for Randy Phillips, the AEG Live concert promoter who manages Usher, said he had “No statement.” When asked if he had any comment, Mariah Carey’s Chris Lighty, responded: “None. I mean, you know, nah.” And finally Mathew Knowles, Beyoncé’s managert and father, did not return phone calls.

Production slashed at some Libya oilfields: manager

BENGHAZI, Libya | Sat Feb 26, 2011 7:55am EST
(Reuters) - Production at the eastern Libyan oilfields of Misla, Sarir and Nafoora has been cut by more than half, and the fields are being jointly secured by workers and the army, an oilfield manager said on Saturday.

Many of Libya's key oil producing areas and terminals are located in the east of the OPEC member state, large chunks of which have fallen to rebels seeking to oust veteran leader Muammar Gaddafi.

"We have cut production to a minimum, well below half our normal production of 100,000 barrels a day, although I cannot give more details for security reasons," said an oilfield manager called Hossam, who works at Misla oilfield 250 miles south of Benghazi. He declined to give his full name.

"Two other fields nearby, Sarir and Nafoora, have done the same," he told Reuters by telephone.

Hossam said there were no security problems at any of the fields. "We are working as one team, one Libyan people, the workers and the army, to secure the oilfields and the infrastructure," he said.

1343 GMT: More on the difficulties for Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh (see 1025 GMT) from the apparent defection of two of Yemen's most important tribes to the anti-regime movement.

Powerful tribal leaders, including those of the Hashid and Baqil, pledged at a gathering north of the capital Sanaa to join protests against Saleh.

"I have announced my resignation from the General People's Congress in protest at the repression of peaceful demonstrators in Sanaa, Taez and Aden," Hashid tribal chief Sheikh Hussein bin Abdullah al-Ahmar was quoted as saying.

The Hashids are considered Yemen's most powerful tribal confederation and include nine clans, among them the Sanhan, long a bulwark of Saleh's regime.

1345 GMT: In an interview with the BBC on Friday, Libya's former Minister of Interior, General Abdel Fattah Younes al-Abidi, explained his break with Muammar Qaddafi, with whom he had worked closely for 47 years.

Younes, who was rumoured to have been kidnapped after his resignation, turned up safe and sound to say Qaddafi will not surrender: "Either he will commit suicide or he will resist till he falls." He continued, "He takes very dangerous decisions in a state of anger. It is impossible to think he is completely sane."

Younes was sent to Benghazi at the end of last week to oversee the suppression of protests in the eastern Libyan city, but he says he rang Col Gaddafi and persuaded him not to use warplanes to crush the protesters. After this, he claims there was an attempt to assassinate him, killing a bodyguard.

Despite his doubts that Qaddafi would concede, Younis appealed to the leader, "My dear brother, when Benghazi fell you should have realised that the end had come. I hoped you would leave for Venezuela or somewhere else. May God show you the righteous way, and stop the annihilation of our people."

42. WTF: US UK, French (special) forces land in Libya (UNCONFIRMED JUST ONE SOURCE):
Islamabad—The United States, Britain and France have sent several hundred “defence advisors” to train and support the anti-Gadhafi forces in oil-rich Eastern Libya where “rebels armed groups” have apparently taken over.

According to an exclusive report confirmed by a Libyan diplomat in the region “the three Western states have landed their “special forces troops in Cyrinacia and are now setting up their bases and training centres” to reinforce the rebel forces who are resisting pro-Qaddafi forces in several adjoining areas.

A Libyan official who requested not to be identified said that the U.S. and British military gurus were sent on February 23 and 24 night through American and French warships and small naval boats off Libyan ports of Benghazi and Tobruk.

The Western forces are reportedly preparing to set-up training bases for local militias set-up by the rebel forces for an effective control of the oil-rich region and counter any push by pro- Qaddafi forces from Tripoli.

Dear Sir or Madam

Re: Warrant for Arrest of War Criminals in Libya

I am writing to you from Libya Watch for Human Rights , which is an independent organization concerned with raising awareness about human rights violations in Libya. As I am sure you are aware, the current situation in Libya is very severe and there have been serious atrocities against helpless individuals being carried out by the Libyan President, his sons and a few of his aides.

The nature of the crimes vary from mass killings to with-holding medicines and medical attention from the wounded to torture to ????

It is for this reason that we are formally requesting that an arrest warrant be issued immediately for the individuals listed below as they have either personally carried out war crimes or have given out the orders for war crimes to be carried out.

- Muamar Abu Minyar Gaddafi
- Saif Al Islam Muamar Gadaffi
- Saadi Muamar Gadaffi
- Hanibal Muamar Gadaffi
- Khamis Muamar Gadaffi
- Abdulla Sonousi Al Migrahi
- Mousa Kosa
- Ahmad Gadaf-Al Dam

As you can appreciate this matter is of utmost urgency in order to stop the blood bath that is taking place in Libya and your prompt attention to this issue would be much appreciated.

Thanking you in advanced for your co-operation.

Yours faithfully

Mr. M. Abdulmalek

METHODS OF URBAN GUERRILLA WARFARE

Urban Guerrilla Warfare - "The giant is known by his toe."

The first thing to understand about urban guerrilla warfare is that it must be used as an ADJUNCT to mass action and not a substitute for it. Faced with superior military forces who apply ruthless urban warfare tactics against the population, counter-techniques of urban guerrilla warfare can be very important in helping to defend the mass movement and weakening the enemy. However, the enemy will only be ultimately overwhelmed by the physical action of a mass attack.

...

Urban guerrilla warfare is a tool to exhaust, disorientate, demoralize and terrorize the state forces. It undermines the ability of the enemy to consolidate his grip on power and to prosecute his strategy. It puts the enemy put onto the back foot and to continuously change tactics. The aim is to weaken the enemy by fragmenting his forces, not allowing him to concentrate forces in specific areas and cutting lines of communication. Each day successive deadly blows should be delivered on different units at different times.

The purpose of the urban guerrillas is to create a situation for the enemy where he is unable to rest or complete his aims. They will keep the enemy in a situation of reacting all the time, rather than being able to continue in a planned proactive way. The level of uncertainty, constant alert and uninterrupted attacks will exhaust their troops and make it easier for the people to defend their areas and to overwhelm the enemy at the point of a determined mass assault for power. The point is to weaken the enemy's forces, so as to reduce the number of casualties among the people when under attack, as well as when the masses are attacking themselves.

Again, urban guerrillas do not set themselves the impossible task of militarily defeating the enemy, but of thoroughly undermining its ability to function properly and to act as the executioners of the people and the revolution. It should precipitate the fastest, least humanely costly and most comprehensive seizure of power by the people themselves.

Une marche de l'opposition algérienne bloquée par la police à Alger

A march of the Algerian opposition blocked by police in Algiers

One hundred demonstrators braved Saturday an important feature of police in Algiers to try their third step in a month for a regime change in Algeria, but their movement has once again been neutralized.

The marchers, led by the president of the Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD), Said Sadi, could not even meet Martyrs Square, where they go, said a journalist from AFP.

Said Sadi soon found himself surrounded before the scheduled start of the march, 1100, by the police. Another member of the RCD, Mohamed Khendek, was evacuated by ambulance.

" I was beaten with batons in the stomach when I tried to oppose the police who charged Said Sadi. I fainted and was taken to hospital. I'm not hurt " "he told AFP by phone after leaving the hospital.

The police fought back towards the waterfront near the RCD supporters gathered under the banner of the National Coordination for Change and Democracy (NCCD), a movement born a month ago but already split in two.

Turkey speaks out against sanctions ahead of weekend UN Security Council meeting over Libya

But German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron talked on the phone Saturday and agreed the U.N. Security Council should approve harsh sanctions against the Libyan regime as soon as possible, Merkel's spokesman, Christoph Steegmans said in a statement.

A draft sanctions resolution circulated by France, Britain, Germany and the United States also would refer Gadhafi's violent crackdown to the International Criminal Court so it can investigate possible crimes against humanity.

France's U.N. Ambassador Gerard Araud told reporters there was broad agreement among the council's 15 members on an asset freeze and travel ban, which will specifically name about 20 top Libyans, and on an arms embargo.

He said referring Libya to the ICC, the war crimes tribunal, "is a sensitive topic" because some council members are not parties to the treaty that established the court, including the U.S., China, Russia, Lebanon, India and Gabon.

Araud said the proposed sanctions do not include a no-fly zone over Libya — as some Gadhafi opponents have urged. He also said any U.N.-sanctioned military action "is not an option at this stage." NATO has also ruled out any intervention in Libya.
