To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

Tears Flow at UN Security Council Over Bloodshed in Libya
Margaret Besheer | United Nations

http://media.voanews.com/images/480*351/ap_libya_un_ambassador_480_25feb2011.jpg
Libya's deputy UN ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi, right, hugs Libya's UN ambassador Mohamed Shalgham after a meeting of the Security Council at United Nations headquarters in New York, February 25, 2011

The Libyan ambassador to the United Nations made an impassioned appeal Friday to the U.N. Security Council, calling on the U.N.’s most powerful body to adopt a strong resolution and "save Libya." His speech ended with him embracing his deputy, who had defected from Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's camp earlier this week, and both men sobbing as the U.N. Secretary-General and other ambassadors came over to embrace them and shake their hands.

It was not immediately clear that Ambassador Abd al-rahman Shalgham was going to change his position and take the side of the Libyan people, but as his emotional speech to the council took shape, it became clear he no longer supported Gadhafi, a man he has called a friend since childhood.

Shalgham refuted Gadhafi’s claims that anti-government protesters are taking to the streets because they are on drugs, saying "a mountain" of pills would not have been enough for all the people who have taken to the streets of Benghazi. Through an interpreter, he addressed the council about Gadhafi.

"Today I listen to him telling his people either I rule over you or I kill you, I destroy you. Don’t be afraid, Libya is united, Libya will remain united. Libya will be a progressive state. But I tell my brother Gadhafi, leave the Libyans alone," said Shalgham.

PRESS RELEASE ACROSS CANADA

CANADIAN-LIBYANS CALL FOR ACTION TO END WAR CRIMES

OTTAWA, Feb. 24 /CNW/ - Communities across Canada are uniting on Saturday February 26th to voice their outrage at the violence being inflicted upon unarmed Libyan civilians by Col. Muammar Al-Gaddafi's regime. As of February 21st the International Coalition Against War Criminals has reported 519 deaths, 3,980 wounded and at least 1,500 missing in Libya since the start of demonstrations a week ago. Figures are likely higher, with some reports of the death toll reaching 1,000.

Col. Gaddafi is defiant, and insisted that he would "cleanse Libya house by house". As the Libyan Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Ibrahim Dabbashi declared, "We are sure that what is going on now in Libya is a crime against humanity…it is impossible to stay silent."

Canadian-Libyans are united in demanding that the Harper government act now to end the violence. Canadian-Libyans ask all nations to stand with the Libyan people by:

Calling on the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action and invoke Chapter 7 to stop the massacre of civilians, and deployment of international peace-keeping troops.

Establishing a no-fly zone to prevent Gaddafi from using the air-force.

    Facilitating the delivery of medical supplies and humanitarian aid;

Indicting Gaddafi for crimes against humanity and trying him in the International Criminal Court.

The immediate deployment of U.N. troops to confirm reports of crimes against humanity.

    Freezing any assets belonging to the Gadaffi family and senior officials;

Protests will take place on Saturday February 26th at the following times and locations:

Ottawa: Parliament Hill at 1 pm
Toronto: Dundas Square at 12 pm
London: Victoria Park at 2 pm
Windsor: Windsor City Hall at 2 pm

Fundraiser and Rally, Saturday @ 1:00 PM

Untold hundreds of Libyans have been killed and many thousands have been injured since the beginning of the Libyan uprising last week. Hospitals all over Libya are experiencing severe shortages of medical supplies and manpower. The people of Libya right now need all the help they can get in order to care for the wounded.

The Libyan community in Vancouver is organizing a fundraiser and rally at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 26th at the steps of the Vancouver Public Library. This event has 2 aims. The first is to raise awareness about what is happening in Libya, in order to put pressure on governments and aid groups to condemn the use of violence against civilians and to send aid to Libya as fast as possible. The second aim is to raise funds to purchase medical supplies and send doctors into parts of Libya where they are needed immediately.

Gaddafi & the seven sons, blond mercenaries and X
Friday 25 February 2011
11:46 am

...

It was dawn when X says “armoured vehicles approached the Square. They opened fire on the unarmed protesters. “They had big calibre guns – like anti-aircraft guns. You could see the shells bouncing off the streets.”

He saw, with his own eyes he says, scores of people mown down. Mention the estimate of dead given by Human Rights Watch at this point of around 270 dead and he simply laughs in a tired way: “We all saw that figure on the TV – we just laughed.”

From then, he says Tripoli has essentially shut down. No businesses, shops or schools function. Colonel Gaddafi has the army here, armed civilian militias on the streets. “There are mercenaries fighting for Gaddafi for sure. You see them, black guys, sub Saharan. But I also saw guys with blond hair and blue eyes in central Tripoli. They were controlling the technical side. They were speaking Russian or Ukrainian. You don’t get near these guys – not ever.”

...

Then X lowers his voice and leans in, even though it’s so late the bar staff have gone to bed: “But f*** the oil. It doesn’t matter now. Blair and then Bush in 2003 they supported this murderer. But there is no going back now for the people here. No going back.”

...

I hear Ukrainian mercs on AJE today. I'm sure there are plenty of European mercs involved now too.

...

Later, Gaddafi appeared in Green Square to give another angry and defiant speech to crowds of supporters waving banners and cheering him – a message that he is alive and in control – as he pledged to "open up the arsenals".

Libyan state TV, trying hard to maintain an air of normality in the virtual absence of independent media, denied the reports of deaths. Foreign journalists escorted into town from the airport by loyalists were confined to their hotels.

Ominously, there were claims by opposition sources that missing people were being held as human shields in the sprawling Bab al-Aziziya compound where Gaddafi lives and works.

Libyan exiles said that a reported rebellion by military personnel at Tripoli's Mitiga air base was linked to calls by air force officers in the liberated eastern city of Benghazi to come out against the regime. Analysts believe defections from the military are likely to prove more decisive than actual fighting as the nine-day uprising enters what may be its final phase.

35. "Final phase"
Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

It's urgent that this be ended as soon as possible to STOP THE BLOODSHED.

37. I've always been anti-death penalty
Across the board. For everyone.

But I gotta say - the Libyans can do whatever the hell they want to Gaddafi and I will cheer them on. Actually - looking at these pictures - I'm about to the state of saying that we should not let psychopaths live, much less achieve power. All that pain, all that suffering, all that death - for a complete fucking loon who should never have been in charge of a high school dance committee, much less a nation.

59. Society holds killing as justified in defense of oneself or others...
...against imminent harm.

The present situation in Libya qualifies--in spades.
