Thieves burglarize home while parents at funeral for son
While the Miller family buried their son, someone tried to force their way through the front door of their four-bedroom home but was unsuccessful, police said.

The intruder then broke the glass on the door, reached in and unlocked it. When the family came home, they found that keys and other items had been stolen.

Whoever broke into the home remains at large.

"Just cold, heartless people, that's all I can say," said Brian Nidever, a locksmith who made a new set of locks for the house later Thursday.

Police said it was unclear whether the burglar knew who lived in the home.

"We want to think it was coincidental, but I think you probably have people looking through the obituaries, looking for high-profile deaths or whatever or get information from the media," Nidever said.

1. Sociopath Nation
Just another facet of life in Sociopath Nation, where greed is a virtue and those who always look out for No. 1 are rewarded.

2. When I was a kid, my sister was killed in a car wreck.
Edited on Fri Feb-25-11 08:47 PM by moobu2
There was a story in the local paper about the accident and they mentioned where my sister worked and someone robbed her bosses house while he attended the funeral. They eventually caught the guys and they confessed that they had planned the breakin around the news story and funeral.

This story just reminded me of it.

3. These are sick individuals, but this is a common thing.
They suggest that you always have someone at the house during calling hours and a funeral. This is the offer I make to anyone who is in this situation. I figure that I am being more helpful than anything else I can do for them by protecting the house.

6. I seem to recall there was on old episode of Dragnet about this...
The thieves would read the death notices in the paper, and hit the houses while the owners were away at the funeral.

8. I don't remember hearing it that long ago. Maybe that is where
the thieves got the idea.

7. It happens all the time, if it's known the dead had painkillers.
It's not that uncommon, around here.

Or people will come to visit after the funeral and find an opportunity to steal meds.

11. Where I come from, it's common to be sure to have folks at the house
during a funeral/wake/viewing if such a thing has been published in an obituary. It's because there are far too many folks living on this very planet that simply waste space while they suck. I learned that long ago, and I was saddened the first time the warning went ignored yet the act fulfilled.

12. When my husband died, the first thing my neighbors did was decide who would "house sit" during
the calling hours and the funeral. I was surprised when they told me what they were doing. Evidently, this is very common, regardless of wealth or lack of it, neighborhood etc. I'm now in a different area. A few weeks ago, my next-door neighbor's Dad (who lived with them) passed away. So I went over and offered to stay at the house during those events. They were grateful. So my pitbull and other dogs protected my house, while I went to their's. Very sad that this is necessary, even out in these beautiful mountains of VA.
