I had a very interesting and thought-provoking discussion with one of my sisters, who just last month retired as a Pennsylvania public school teacher after nearly 40 years of service. We were discussing the events in Wisconsin, and she pointed out something about collective bargaining, especially as it concerns public school teachers, that has had very little play in the media but which is, I think, very important. My sister said that, while everybody thinks collective bargaining is all about money and benefits, the reality is it encompasses much, much more. It also covers things like negotiations about class sizes, fairness in teacher assignments, etc., that have direct bearing on the quality of education kids receive. These issues, too, are dealt with in collective bargaining negotiations. I would love to see more folks pointing this aspect out.
