There isn’t the rancor or drama of what’s going on in Wisconsin, but Gov. Dave Heineman says he is absolutely determined to make drastic changes in the way Nebraska settles labor disputes involving state and local public employees.
The big news this week is that Heineman virtually assured everyone that if satisfactory legislative revisions aren’t made in the way the Commission on Industrial Relations works, the question of whether the CIR should be eliminated will be decided in a statewide election.
And it was clear that Heineman is reserving the right to decide what is “satisfactory.”
"I'm trying to emphasize that I'm not going to sign into law something that's a minor tweak that doesn't do any good, and everyone wants to stand up and say, 'Oh, look what we did,'" Heineman said.
Meanwhile, legislative leaders said they were working on the issue in good faith with concerned parties.
Failure by the Legislature to act, Heineman said, will almost certainly mean an initiative petition that could eliminate the CIR entirely.
