The lost Enid Blyton novel: After decades gathering dust, one of her earliest tale is discovered
Edited on Fri Feb-25-11 03:07 AM by Vehl

It sounds like the type of discovery that one of her Famous Five characters might have made.

A long-forgotten yellowed manuscript, which had spent decades gathering dust, has been identified as a previously unseen novel by Enid Blyton.

Titled Mr Tumpy’s Caravan, the 180-page story tells the tale of a magical caravan and the travels of its inhabitants.

The children’s author, who has sold 500million copies of books including the Secret Seven and Malory Towers series, was not known to have any unpublished material.

But the find was made when a haul of her belongings was sold following the death of her eldest daughter, Gillian Baverstock.

This is really amazing!. I loved her books when I was a kid. The days I spent reading her "famous five" and "secret seven" novels are unforgettable. My mom read them as a kid herself! What I particularly love about Enid Blyton's work is the simplicity of the characters. What I mean by simplicity is that the characters engage in really fun activities but do not depend on any "modern" appliances like cell phones..or whatnot. The books encourage and invite the young readers to imagine in vivid detail the world/adventure the characters take part in. Enid Blyton does this in such a fascinating manner than I doubt even a futuristic virtual reality system would even come close to rivaling her skills of imaginary world creation/adventure. :)

Sadly, a lot of children here in the US are not aware of her, or her books. :(

Enid Blyton is probably one of the most famous writers of all time, with around 600 million copies of her books sold around the world.

2. I still have my Noddy Books
and I'm 58!

Enid Blyton took me from toddler to adolescent and is why I am the voracious reader I am today.

4. I was hooked on the Adventure series
They were in our public library and I checked them out over and over again. Many years later I tracked them down on ebay.

I'm not sure she was ever published in the states--the books I have were all published in the UK.

9. Yep, they are not well known here in the US

They are pretty much the "must read" books for any kid who reads English books in Europe and Asia. Surprisingly they never became famous/known here.

10. Yeah
Once, a College teacher of mine over here was listing some famous children's authors, and she never mentioned Enid Blyton. I asked her "Should you not add Enid Blyton to that list too?". And she was like "Who?"

I could understand someone not knowing a relatively famous European author...but Enid Blyton is The most famous children's author in the world though. This discrepancy always baffles me. i wonder if some readers can shed some light on this.
