Uh-oh! Harry Reid is pissed and he IS going to do something about it...
Reid takes on Nevada brothels:

(CNN) -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is taking aim at the world's oldest profession, calling for an end to legal prostitution in his home state of Nevada.

Addressing state legislators Tuesday in Carson City, the Democrat said it was time for an "adult conversation" on a topic that often spurs as much awkward laughter as it does serious debate. He warned that the state's Wild West tradition has become an impediment to economic growth, causing companies to think twice before relocating there.

Nevada's reputation is suffering, he said.

"Nevada needs to be known as the first place for innovation and investment, not as the last place where prostitution is still legal," Reid said. Parents "don't want their children to look out a school bus and see a brothel. Or to live in a state with the wrong kind of red lights."

Go get 'em Harry!! Thanks for keeping your powder dry over the last 10 years so that you could fight this battle!!

I can't begin to express my relief.
I was so worried he'd do something trivial.

I mean what's with this?

5. Yes, there is something to '..saving Nevada's reputation..'
Leave the prostitution to Congress...they are much better at selling themselves.

6. Prostitution is a job. Harry Ried should leave those ladies alone.
This is an attack on women and putting them out of work. Prostitutes should really unionize in that state. I'm not joking.

12. seriously.. and these prostitutes are safe and can get health care.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_Nevada

clip

Brothel prostitutes work as independent contractors and thus do not receive any unemployment, retirement or health benefits. They are responsible for paying Federal income tax and their earnings are reported to the IRS via form 1099-MISC. Nevada does not have a state income tax. The women typically work for a period of several weeks, during which time they live in the brothel and hardly ever leave it. They then take some time off. It has been argued that the tight control that brothels exert over the working conditions precludes the women from legally being classified as independent contractors.

Since 1986, when mandatory testing began, not a single brothel prostitute has tested positive for HIV. The mandatory condom law was passed in 1988. A study conducted in 1995 in two brothels found that condom use in the brothels was consistent and sexually transmitted diseases were accordingly absent. The study also found that few of the prostitutes used condoms in their private lives.<23>

15. That's why they should unionize.
I know they don't get health benefits, unemployment or retirement. But they should because they pay taxes and it's legal in that state. They need to really organize and petition and fight. If they are doing that, I'm going to do some research and help them out. They deserve to have all the benefits allotted to them since their profession is legal in that state.

That idea got voted down, though.

7. Is this the only fight he CAN wage?
He's generally so impotent in Washington that he decided to go back to NV and tell the legislature what to do. What a waste.

8. I'm no fan of brothels, nor what they say about womens' role in society, but...
Right here? At this juncture in history? With the country careening toward an economic meltdown, THIS is what Harry Reid cares about the most?! Jeez, way to keep your finger on the pulse of the nation, Harry.

9. What a tiger...
Next thing you know, he'll be sending strongly worded letters and using words like "unfortunate" and "deplorable." The brothels will flee the state just to avoid having to listen to him bleat and whine any longer.

Now THAT'S leadership.

16. Meh. Reid drags this dusty oldie out every once in a while.
It basically got no response from the state legislators.

According to one of our local papers, the last time a prostitution ban made into bill form umpteen years ago, it was basically killed upon introduction.

But, it was kind of funny watching the local press fall over themselves to interview the owner of the Moonlight Bunny Ranch. (He and several of his workers showed up for Reid's speech in front of the legislature.)

Lots and lots of politicians are doing that. Jump in to the easy fight on small issues to avoid looking like they're obfuscating the big important issues. Smoke and mirrors.
