This is just cruel: Egyptian man names daughter 'Facebook'
Egyptian man names daughter "Facebook"
Posted on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 10:30 by Lydia Leavitt

Sometimes it seems like Facebook and Twitter are nothing more than sites designed for updating exactly what you ate for lunch. But recently, the social networking sites have proved themselves far more useful, helping to fuel political change in both Egypt and Tunisia.

A man in Egypt went as far as to name his newborn daughter "Facebook" to honor the social networking site he feels is partly responsible for commanding change.

What kind of nicknames can come from such a name? Perhaps Facey? Or FB?

Egyptian man names daughter "Facebook"Gamal Ibrahim, the man responsible for naming his daughter Facebook, said he did it "to express his joy at the achievements made by the January 25 youth," reported Al-Ahram, one of Egypt’s most popular newspapers.

4. Someone on Twitter actually made the joke
..."Thank god this didn't happen in 2005, the kid would be named MySpace." :D

5. His heart was in the right place -- joy for both the Egyptian victory and the birth of his daughter.

7. As someone pointed out upthread, in a non-English tongue the syllables could...
...sound rather nice to the ear. If I ran into an Egyptian who had the first name Burquittab, would I necessarily know that that was Arabic for Facebook? Well, it's how I strung together the words for face/eyes and book, anyway, sort of a portmanteau. Actually, "Portmanteau" would not make a bad French lad's name, LOL!
