Justice Breyer: Reaction to Bush v. Gore shows America's strengths
Feb. 17, 2011
by
Jane Musgrave
Palm Beach Coast Staff Writer

WEST PALM BEACH — Bush v. Gore was a triumph, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer told a packed ballroom at the Palm Beach County Convention Center on Wednesday.

It's not because Breyer agreed with the decision that ended Florida's infamous 2000 election debacle and sent George W. Bush to the White House.

"I thought it was totally wrong," he said of the 5-4 decision. "I said we shouldn't have heard the case. We should have dismissed it."
Still, even though he was on the losing end of the decision and wrote a blistering dissent, he said it underscored one of the most remarkable parts of the American system.

"Despite the feelings, despite the conviction of many who thought it was wrong, people did not go into the streets and shoot each other," he said. "There was no violence. There were not stones thrown or worse and people accepted it."

To those in the crowd of roughly 1,000 who still believe the high court stole the election from Al Gore and think a little violence might have been warranted, Breyer had some advice:

1. Really? It was the final nail in the coffin of the American Experiment
nothing good there, at all. It showed the complete breakdown of democracy - corrupt justices, complicit media, mob rule, and failure of the good people to take democracy back from the criminals. If we had taken the opportunity to overtake the SCOTUS building and bring the traitors to summary justice, that would have shown America's strength.

5. I believe it reflected the state of America's power but that travesty didn't show its' strength.
I also believe the dynamic of power as being inverse to that of muscle, in the case of power; the more you use it, the more you lose it.

For the good of the nation, I wouldn't suggest for the Supreme Court to ever go down that road again.

Thanks for the thread, Mira.
