Democrats Tell Army: No More NASCAR

"It’s just a waste of money. A complete waste of taxpayer money. The military shouldn’t be in the business of sponsoring race cars, they should be in the business of fighting wars," said Bill Harper, chief of staff for Rep. Betty McCollum, a Democrat from Minnesota. Harper says the Army spent $7 million dollars on NASCAR last year, and $11.6 million in 2009. Another $5 million was spent sponsoring drag racing.

This is contrasted with the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard, all of which ceased their NASCAR sponsorships five years ago.

1. One goes in circles
and the other goes in a straight line, does it really take 23.6 million every two years to do that?

2. Speaking of military dollars, who pays for those two-second pre-race Air Force flyovers?
That's got to be some serious change being spent every weekend.

12. Each unit has a budget for training. Flyovers are requested by various
organizations regularly throughout the year. These flyovers, when approved, are paid for with funds from that training budget.

Pilots must log a certain amount of time in order to remain proficient, training time. Flyovers can be used for that.

3. And if the American car companies
Edited on Thu Feb-17-11 05:32 AM by MGB67deux
raced at Le Mans, 24 hours, left and right, night and day and through the rain they might have more respect on the world stage. Audi and Pugeot.... PUGEOT!!! continue to be top contenders with diesel engines. Last year they covered nearly 3,000 miles in the 24 hours.

It shows at the dealership where Audi (and VW) have TDI diesels that get outstanding mileage.

Perhaps Nascar fans think that "cutting edge" technology is overhead valves. Pushrods? Carburators? That was the 1930s!

Nascar is wrestling. The cars are identical except for the decals (decal headlights and grills.... comical).

What they promote is "feuds" between the "Good" drivers and the "bad" drivers. Kevin Harvick versus Juan Pablo Montoya. Gorgeous George versus Mr Moto. The announcers talk more about the color schemes of the corporate sponsors than they do technology.

The most interesting aspect of watching Nascar on TV is to see how many ways they can avoid showing nearly empty grandstands.

14. I have no problem with the Army recruiting...
... and hope they continue to do so successfully with all means at their disposal in order to get the best and brightest.

Also, I state that number as it was reported. I have no idea if it is accurate but how do you know for a fact that it is a "bullshit" figure?

8. No... Army uses NASCAR as a recruitment tool.
That's what their "sponsorship" is really all about. Same goes for the Golden Eagle parachute jumps, the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds shows, the flyovers...

13. It's advertising. They probably spend much more on TV
If NASCAR provides a good return on advertising dollars then it's smarter to spend it there than spend it on another method that doesn't.
