Missouri Senator Wants to Eliminate Child Labor Laws, Really

http://blog.aflcio.org/2011/02/14/missouri-senator-wants-to-eliminate-child-labor-laws-really/

by Mike Hall, Feb 14, 2011

I have been writing about politics and legislation from a workers’ viewpoint for the better part of three decades. I still get angry and my blood pressure jumps when politicians come after workers and unions with the same old lies and bull crap that we are seeing today in states across the country. Just check out here, here and here what’s happening in Wisconsin.

But there isn’t much that surprises me anymore, let alone shocks me. Well, today, I’m shocked. Missouri State Sen. Jane Cunningham (R) has introduced a bill to minimize child labor laws. I could find all kinds of colorful words and descriptions to show just how crazed and outrageous is S.B. 222.

But let’s just use the official summary of the bill from the Missouri state Senate website and if you don’t believe me, click here and read it yourself.

* This act modifies the child labor laws.
* It eliminates the prohibition on employment of children under age fourteen.
* Restrictions on the number of hours and restrictions on when a child may work during the day are also removed.

FULL story at link.

1. What happened here?
Did Jane Cunningham read David Copperfield and decide the lifestyle of young David was worthy of emulation?

5. More Reaganism
Reagan had a bill that allowed business to pay teenagers under minimum wage..It sounded good on it's face but after a bit of thought it was just more same o-same o. Allowing business to pay less than minimum wage for teenagers just meant no hiring of adults if the job didin't warrant it.

6. Sadly the population of Missouri, especially southern Missouri, went and elected a bunch of idiots
Southern Missouri has always been the batshit conservative fundy crazy part of the state, and this last election saw them especially riled up.

Fortunately we have a Democratic governor who will veto this sort of shit.

But still, there is going to be some insane shit coming out of Missouri for at least a couple of years.

8. LOL I knew before I clicked it would be Cunningham
She's a major frootloop. She was a state rep, termed out and was just elected senator. We may find ourselves dealing with this lunatic for another 8 years.

She's also head of the education committee. :puke:

13. When
you read this bill it is not what I think a lot of poster are thinking it is. While I did not read every word it appears to be only about entertainment jobs with a lot protection from parents. I would suggest looking it up then commenting on it.
