As to the rest of it, everyone was so excited in 2008, counties that hadn't gone D in decades went for Obama. In 2010, there was widespread disenchantment, deserved or not, and all the progressives stayed home. In my district, a real blue-dog type with limited cognitive acuity ran to replace Dave Obey, losing to an ex-DA from Ashland. The DA's dog probably could have beaten the Dem.
