Pentagon would get brief boost under Obama budget

Mon Feb 14, 2011 2:37pm EST

By Andrea Shalal-Esa and Jim Wolf

WASHINGTON, Feb 14 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama is seeking $671 billion for the U.S. military next year, offering the Pentagon a short-term boost for its core operations even as it prepares for tighter budgets in coming years.

The administration's fiscal 2012 budget proposal includes $118 billion for wars, chiefly in Afghanistan and Iraq, on top of a record Pentagon base budget of $553 billion.

The base budget request is $22 billion above the level enacted for 2010, a new high even as the government faces an overall freeze in federal spending.

1. "brief boost" ?
You know how these things become permanent under the Obama/Clinton administration.

Yeah, "they're gonna fix it later!"
:woohoo:

3. Those millions are going to a great cause, you know.
Those poor people freezing to death can be proud to know that their sacrifice is being used to purchase an ass warmer for a Joint Strike Fighter or F22 pilot's seat. We gotta feed the military industrial complex somehow. You don't expect the wealthy, the only ones to benefit from the MIC's actions in this country, to actually pitch in, do you?

7. " $118 billion for wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, $41.5 billion less "
<...>

The administration's fiscal 2012 budget proposal includes $118 billion for wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, $41.5 billion less than requested last year, given the troop drawdown in Iraq.

<...>

That's the budget to cut even more.

9. Yet the base budget for the Defense* Department is going up
and the budgets that acutally help people are going down. The president, who claims to be such a good Christian that he can't support Gay marriage, has no problem increasing people's suffering. And with this budget, he not only gets to hurt poor Americans he gets to keep lobbing drones at Pakistan. What a guy!

*Really, isn't it time the name was changed back to "War Department" - that is what it exists for.

You don't think he's a Christian? What about a Muslim?

14. I think he's every bit as a good a Christian as the bigots he was sucking up to when he spoke to
"The Family" at their "prayer" breakfast. They all apparently worship supply-side Jesus and think Christ was only joking about that "least of my brethren" stuff.

BTW - anyone who was a true follower of any of the world's religions would care more about alleviating suffering than making war. Your remark about thinking Obama is a Muslim was especially inane.

17. Oh, that's right,
you had indicated that the President and Senator Gillibrand were of questionable character for having participated in the prayer breakfast.

"BTW - anyone who was a true follower of any of the world's religions would care more about alleviating suffering than making war."

There is saying one cares and actually doing something about it.

11. I remember when Bush started this they said the entire war Would cost 80b and
be paid for with Iraqi oil.

Never believe someone who consistently lies.
