Police: Saratoga Springs man found hypothermic after ski trip, currently listed in critical condition


JAY, Vt. — A Saratoga Springs man was was listed in critical condition Sunday night after his friends lost contact with him while skiing in Vermont Saturday, Vermont State Police said.

At 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, Vermont State Police responded to a report of a “deceased male” being transported by Missisquoi Rescue Squad from Jay Peak Village. Upon their arrival, police learned that Jason Eichorst, 32, of Saratoga Springs, had become separated from a group of friends after he and three others left a Jay Peak bar to ski back to their condo at around 5:30 p.m., taking a shortcut.

Police say Eichorst was unable to make the trip and stopped with another member of the group while the remainder continued on. His friends returned outside and found Eichorst about two hours later, after he and the second group member had failed to meet them at their destination, police said.

At about 4 p.m. Sunday police received a report that 22-year-old Steve Buchanan of Plymouth, Mass., was missing after he skied out of bounds.

At about 6:30 p.m. police located Buchanan from the GPS coordinates from his 911 calls. He was found at about 7:30 p.m.

At about noon on Saturday police received a cell-phone call from 36-year-old Susan Yee of New York City after she got lost after skiing out of bounds at the Pico ski area in Mendon.

Virginia skier, missing overnight, found safe in Vermont

KILLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermont State Police say a skier who went missing at Killington ski resort after skiing out of bounds has been found safe.

Twenty-two-year-old Philip Embury, of Boyce, Va., was found in fair condition by ski patrol members about 11:40 a.m. Friday. He was taken for a medical evaluation.

Killington, Vermont - February 4, 2011

Another ski rescue in our region, this time at Pico Mountain Resort.

Vermont State Police say 24-year-old Greg Zagar, of Clinton, N.Y., was skiing with a group of friends at 12:30 on Thursday afternoon when they went out of bounds off Upper Giant Killer and he got lost. A friend notified ski patrol that Zagar was missing at 2 p.m.

Crews were able to guide him out of the woods on his cell phone. At 5:45, nearly four hours after the rescue effort began, Killington/Pico Ski Patrol found Zagar behind the AOT garage in Mendon. He was not injured.

At least nine skiers have required rescue at Vermont ski mountains in the past week alone.

Vt. National Guard helicopter finds lost skier

DUXBURY, Vt. (AP) - Officials say a Vermont National Guard helicopter helped locate a skier lost on Camels Hump in Duxbury.

State police say they received a 911 call at about 2:15 on Monday afternoon from 23-year-old Julie Smith of South Burlington who had become separated from a companion while telemark skiing down Camels Hump.

Smith told police she was lost, stuck in a ravine of deep snow and was not prepared to spend the night on the mountain.
