About 70 public workers and their supporters picket Governor Scott Walker's mansion in Madison, Wisconsin on February 13th. Those picketing oppose legislation introduced on Feb. 11, 2001 which proposes to eliminate collective bargaining, and allow only negotiation of wages amongst other measures that severely curtail the rights of public workers in Wisconsin. South Central Federation of Labor and other labor and community groups were there.

4. Yep!
I'm attending tomorrow's protests.

People have human rights, and the right to collectively bargain for all parts of compensation is one of those rights.
The PUSH-BACK in Wisconsin is ON!

7. No longer have a direct connection, other than the realization
that the state will set the tone for other employers, and this will do great harm to my neighbors and thereby my community.

11. You are absolutely right...
I was asked why I have taken such an interest in these events since I am far removed from Wisconsin in New York, and my response is that this will definately make inroads elsewhere if we allow it.

Hell, Ohio Gov. Kasich is already drawing from the same playbook and using similar anti-labor rhetoric.

This affects us ALL.

14. It's had to describe the furore here.
It's not all in the streets. Yesterday we got 4 phone calls asking us to make calls to legislators on the issue, and when I called my State Senator his voicemail box was full. One of the calls we got was from a a friend in Madison who was just calling everyone she knows & asking them to act.

There is a Facebook page devoted to mounting a recall effort against Walker. He has to be in office for a year before you can have a recall election, but these people are getting an early start.

Wisconsin was asleep at the switch in November. Maybe this is what it will take to wake up this once-great, progressive state.

16. Updates will be valued, Jackpine.
Wisconsin is a test, one the people must not fail.
I cannot imagine a bigger "in your face" fascism threat than what Walker is trying to do.
Attacks on the unions are ALWAYS in the totalitarian playbook.

18. MFW (My Favorite Wingnut) called last night.
He's a retired state employee & his wife is a publicly (county) employed nurse. He was all steamed about what Walker is threatening to do to her pension, etc. I asked why he was angry. After all, he voted for Walker, and Walker was just doing what he was elected to do. He said his wife's union was calling and wanting her to express herself to her state legislators, but of course he thought that was futile.

He then went on to rail against the bailout of GM, and said he thought that if the government wanted to help the auto industry, they should have given ordinary people $10,000 to help them buy a car. I said, "But that's socialism! Let me explain the difference between capitalism and socialism. When the government gives money to the rich, that's capitalism. But when they giv e it to the poor, that's socialism"

Actually, he took my needling very well; we've been doing that to each other for many years. He's saying that he doesn't see any Presidential candidates in either party (except for Ron Paul) that he could bring himself to vote for. He was a cheerleader when we went into Iraq, but is now asking why Obama hasn't brought the troops home from the Middle East. "Bring 'em all home and turn all that sand into glass" is his solution. I suggested that we didn't want to do that because glass is too hard to drill through for oil.

The conversation went on like that for a while, but I think I'm starting to detect cracks in his unregenerate Republicanism. If it's happening to him, it's happening to others, I'm thinking.

21. I have discussions with several wing nuts around here.
Have found that the rules of southern discourse actually help. I never disagree with them, but always search for a point we CAN agree on, without using a label.

What taught me that was, years ago, some redneck guy practically was foaming at the mouth over racial equality, except he could not handle big words well, and kept saying the south needed MORE " intergation".
And I found I could totally agree with him ( tho I did not correct his pronunciation, either).
The more I said " You are right" the happier he got.
Was a memorable experience.

28. Let him eat cake. He got what he voted for.
It is highly likely that many of the people out protesting voted for Walker, but are now pissed because their asses are now being burned and there is no welfare queen to be found, even as they desperately look for one.
