The monuments in our nation's capital - the great, the inspirational, the moving . . .
Edited on Sun Feb-13-11 10:48 PM by Stinky The Clown
We're watching the Smithsonian Channel. They're doing a one hour show on the monuments in and around DC.

The FDR Memorial. Who even knows its there?

The Washington Monument.

The Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials.

The various war memorials - Viet Nam, WWII, Korea . . . . .

Freedom (does anyone know where this one is?)

What monument affects you the most?

What monument (of the more than 200) stands out for you?

edit to fix typo in title

Not the one where they have to chase the kids out of the fountains all the time. In an awkward corner of the National Archives block, there sits the memorial Roosevelt chose for himself:

"If they are to put up any memorial to me, I should like it to be placed in the center of that green plot in front of the Archives Building. I should like it to consist of a block about the size (of a desk)."

Just a block of marble the size of a desk.

7. The "war memorials" are actually memorials to veterans...
...not memorials to war. Of the major ones on the Mall, only the National WWII Memorial does not include a reference to veterans in its title.

The other two are the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial and the Korean War Veterans' Memorial.

The Freedom Memorial I'm assuming you mean the African Civil War Memorial?

I've been to most and we discover even a few more each year some long forgotten.

i do find myself affected by being there around all that history. Lincoln and vietnam. but what actually brought me to tears was standing at JFK's grave.
