To the Editor,

I didn’t wish for the failure that was the Bush administration. I didn’t wish for lies about Weapons of Mass Destruction that led us to an unnecessary war, resulting in 4,228 deaths of American soldiers and 1,000,000 Iraqis.

I didn’t wish for 4.5 million Iraqi orphans, including 500,000 homeless children. I didn’t wish for the neglect of our wounded soldiers that was exemplified by the Walter Reed scandal. I didn’t wish for the disregard of our military by failing to equip and protect them as too few of them were sent to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I didn’t wish for the total disregard for the citizen-soldiers known as the National Guard to be rotated on multiple deployments to war zones, leaving our nation and their families in jeopardy. I didn’t wish for the shortchanging of our veterans by cutting services and raising fees for our veterans.

I didn’t wish for the crumbling economy with poor oversight of investment banks by the SEC, 1,000 percent increase in the deficit and tax cuts in light of a war in two countries. I didn’t wish for a record number of homeowners to lose their homes due to mismanagement of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. I didn’t wish for a complete disregard of the Constitution and law shown by the Bush administration, as evidenced by one signing statement for every 10 laws passed — making these laws invalid.

I didn’t wish for over 45 million Americans to be without health insurance, leaving a sicker population to be entering our emergency rooms for primary care. I didn’t wish for record high unemployment, decreases in consumer spending and closures of businesses large and small as a direct result of the 2003 tax cuts proposed and passed by President Bush-to the objection of 10 Nobel laureates in economics.

I didn’t wish for any of these, and yet they happened.

Now I hear people wishing for the failure of the Obama administration. Who would wish for the failure of their country?

President Obama has a formidable task ahead of him. I pray he has the strength and foresight to create success out of the failures left for him.
