Palin impersonator hoaxes conservatives
CPAC 2011: "Sarah Palin"
Posted Friday, February 11, 2011 11:17 AM | By David Weigel

Midway through Mitt Romney's speech to CPAC, I heard a rumor -- Sarah Palin was in the hotel! Yesterday's rumor about Dick Cheney had panned out, so I walked over to the lobby of the hotel and saw what was pretty obviously a Sarah Palin impersonator being interviewed by the conservative video site PJTV.

Why do I say "obvious"? For starters, as FreedomWorks's Tabitha Hale pointed out to me, she had a weave. She was wearing a mock-up of the red jacket/black skirt combo that Palin wore at her 2008 RNC speech -- ie, her most famous outfit, one she doesn't often wear. None of her usual handlers or staff were nearby. She also didn't quite look like Sarah Palin.

"The U2 song 'Even Better Than the Real Thing' does not apply here," muttered one young CPAC attendee who snapped a photo and walked away.

But people can believe all kinds of things. A big enough crowd formed around "Palin" that hotel security started telling people not to stand on the stairs, which made it look like security was protecting a celebrity. The PJTV interview was conducted deadpan, as if "Palin" was Palin. That convinced onlookers, who have far too much trust in the media, that they were seeing Palin made flesh. William Temple, the omnipresent "Tea Party patriot" who dresses in revolutionary garb, rushed over to encourage "Palin" to run for president. She gave him a thumbs up.

12. If Fox News told them an umbrella stand was Barry Goldwater they would belive it
the funniest part of this to me is that Palin herself is just a marketing and media created stand-in for a model that they know will sell....well enough to cover costs.
