Idiotic news reporter statement "It looks like the 4th of July!"
Edited on Fri Feb-11-11 10:38 PM by uppityperson
Golly gee, fireworks and happy happy people celebrating INDEPENDENCE from dictator DAY. Maybe like the "4th of July"? Makes me wonder if she has a clue what "4th of July" actually is for the USAnians.

OK, to clarify, July 4 in the USA is a celebration of Independence Day, but it is rarely called that. Most people that I've heard call it "4th of July" which is the day after the 3rd, before the 5th, that people get off work to watch fireworks, eat hot dogs, drink beer.

The WAY she said it, with a pause, made me wonder if she actually knew the "4th of July" is more than a numbered day involving fireworks and beer.

To me, it looked like INDEPENDENCE DAY, not the day between July 3 and 5 that involves fireworks, hot dogs and beer. Yes news caster, it DOES look like Independence Day.

3. The celebration in Tahir square had fireworks, dancing, celebration going on
The news reporter said "it looks like the 4th of July". I am being sarcastic because 4th of July is actually Independence Day, as was this celebration. And I was wondering if said news person knew that. Ask people what is the 4th of July and see how many say independence day, how many say hot dogs beer parade fireworks.

2. Was she an American reporter explaining it to an American
audience? If so, what is idiotic about it?

4. I've asked people what is 4th of July and get "fireworks, party, beer, hot dogs"
rarely do I hear Independence Day.

Having a news caster pull that, it was the way she said it, irked me.

9. Ok, but in context of the situation
imho, I would think most Americans would equate the symbolism with freedom. I've been to weddings that also have a fireworks display but, the whole context is different and it doesn't remind me of freedom - if anything it reminds me that if they ever want freedom - it's going to cost beau coup bucks.

As my bil is fond of saying - Why is divorce so expensive? Because it's worth it.'

6. I agree with you
reminded me of our July 4th celebrations and perhaps 2/22/11 will be the same.

I get you - the reporter is an ass. Probably finished a step above Palin in one of the four colleges they atended. ;)
