I need to be purified in boiling water. I had to have lunch with my new Republican Assemblyman and
10 Republican doctors. My employer, another doctor, lured me into this with a promise of a free lunch and being paid regular wages for my time there. The lunch was at a fancy, white tablecloth type Italian restaurant. The food was nice, however.........

First, my doctor and another doctor across the table from us get into a verbal pissing match over medical marijuana, which my doctor favors and this other doctor considers the devil's bane. Both are pain management specialists. I can't put my two-cents worth in because I was warned ahead of time not to get into any arguments with either the doctors or the Assemblyman because he has to socialize with them.

Then my new Assemblyman, whom I almost feel sorry for gets up to make a speech. It seems he owns a bunch of gas stations. He's an immigrant who made his money from the bottom up, yet he's drinking the Republican Kool-Aid. He railed on about paying people to take fifteen minute breaks. He said you have to hire an extra employee so they can have breaks, then he finishes by saying that saving businesses money on payroll will increase jobs :wtf: Well it gets worse, he goes on about Worker's Comp and heavy regulations driving businesses out of California to Tennessee taking good jobs with them. Of course every time he talks about cutting employment costs, he ends up saying it's going to create jobs.

I want to get up and shout that if he really wants to create jobs, he should hire attendants at all his stations to pump gas and wash windows so little old ladies like myself don't have to. After all they do it in Oregon and gas is cheaper there than it is here in California, but I had to remain silent. So in his mind deregulating businesses and wages will create jobs. I almost shouted out that, sure it will for all the undocumented immigrants who will be the only people who will take those jobs because they don't know any better. Of course the doctors, also small businesses owners, are nodding their heads in agreement. They really believe the corporate owned Republicans give a rat's ass about small business people. Yet, I couldn't say anything. Fortunately, we had to leave before dessert because we had patients this afternoon.

My blood pressure is still way up there. I told my doctor after the fact that single payer health care would take care of two problems the doctors are upset about, Worker's Comp and mal-practice insurance and instead of blaming workers for employers' ills, they should be blaming the insurance companies. I don't know who is going to convince Mr. Gas Station Owner Assemblyman that his bosses, the Oil companies are making all the money off his hard work. I would like to send him some figures if anyone can point me in the direction of such statistics.

12. Maybe two. Or three.
In any case, the next time one of those lunches is offered, turn it down.

Explain that listening to that much hogwash in one sitting is bad for your blood pressure.

That's why I was bribed. You are right though. Never again. I just can't handle it.

4. You showed extraordinary self-restraint!
Now, you are done with that wonderful lunch, and you can talk to your Assemblyman on your own.

I would write him a letter that contains all the excellent points you've just made, and don't worry about statistics. Just let him have it, both barrels and see how he likes that.

You done good, and I applaud you!

Recommended.

16. I have to communicate with him again because
he is so wrong about mostly everything, yet he seems to care about other things like working women having affordable and quality day care available to them.

6. Keep going to those lunches
Find out what makes him tick.

Then use it against him when you've got a new job (or your doctor wises up) at the NEXT election.

I guess your Foreign entrepreneur thinks only he can make a living here. If we had single payer, we could eliminate most worker's comp insurance....

Essentially, you can't deal with them, because of their lizard brains.

21. I agree. I kind of blame it on the lack of
teaching liberal arts no matter what you will major in these days. All kids learn is what they will do the rest of their lives and nothing else. I had to learn liberal arts in my first two years of college. I hated it because I thought to myself when am I ever going to need to know about going to the opera or why Rome fell, but today I realize it gave me a foundation to jump off of when issues arose that led me to the information I needed not to be entirely stupid about things.

11. You're a better woman than I am, Cleita.
I would have spent that whole luncheon shaking my head, double face-palming, banging my head on the table, and saying, "You are fucking kidding me, right?" No way I could have sat silently through that. The folks above have some great ideas on how to deal with this clown. I'm glad to hear you are planning to follow through on them. As for convincing Mr. Gas Station Owner Assemblyman Dummy that his bosses are exploiting him, just cite him the annual profits they're making at his expense. Then, ask him to compare that to his own profits. You can find the 2009 numbers here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_companies_by_revenue. I'm sure a search with "oil company profits", or some variation of that can get you last year's numbers.

18. I actually whispered something under my breath
when he said something outrageous and I got a dirty look from the boss. I'm not that intimidated by him, but I had promised to be well behaved and I do keep my promises. However, in the future if he wants me to be his "date" at another one of these affairs, I'm going to tell him that I won't be quiet if they get my dander up. That should make him think twice about wanting me there.

to RW talking points like that. You have a strong constitution to hold your lunch down.

Dessert was nice though. We took it to go and I just ate it now. At least I could enjoy it.
