Dem tries to swiftly pass Republican bill, but GOP blocks it
By Josiah Ryan - 02/10/11 02:06 PM ET

In an unusual development, a House Democrat on Thursday tried to quickly pass a Republican bill that seeks to eliminate unnecessary regulations, but the motion was blocked by the GOP majority.

The maneuver is part of the Democrats' strategy of criticizing Republicans on job creation.

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) failed in his procedural attempt to forgo 9.5 hours of debate Republicans have scheduled for Thursday and Friday on the legislation calling for the eradication of needless federal regulations.

Jackson sees the debate as grandstanding and indicated he believes there is enough support for the legislation without further discussion.

Jackson said, "I ask unanimous consent to take {the regulations bill} and ask for its immediate consideration in the House so we can move on creating jobs."

After a testy exchange with the Illnois Democrat, Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), who was presiding over the House, denied the request.

3. This is a three-page bill, one page of which is a list of committees
And basically says, "You committees look at the regulations under your purview, and let's see about getting some of the unnecessary ones off the books." Housekeeping, really, like dusting the shelves or cleaning out the fridge. Jackson apparently doesn't think it needs 9½ hours of debate, particularly since the Republicans want to allocate only one hour to debating renewal of the USA PATRIOT Act (and no amendments will be allowed, a procedural maneuver that last year's Republicans said was The Worst Thing In The World Ever, but this year is just as fine as paint).
