A silent thread requries no work on the part of either the OP nor the repliers. Whereas a long essay would a) be a lot of work, and b) open Pandora's box of replies. Some boorish putz might actually weigh in and disagree. This is taboo on a message board. Another might find errers in the spelling or grammer. Then claws would come out and fur would fly. It could turn into a ballroom blitz. Worse yet, some arrogant pedant in love with the sound of his own keyboard clacking and an inflated estimation of his own rapier wit, might weigh in with a long-winded attempt at being funny. Then adjectives, adverbs and nouns would pile up. Imaginary words would be plagiarized from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It could go on and on with the verbiage, ultimately saying nothing, but using five hundred and fourteen words, and even a few smilies to do so, and causing some people to :rofl: at him and most others to just :eyes:. The whole mess would probably end up with a poorly told anecdote.

Once upon a time, there was a thread in GD which proclaimed "Alan Alda is the excrement". Only using the s-word instead of the long form. This then generated an angry reply about being derogatory towards Mr. Alda and then an angry argument about whether it is a compliment or an insult to be called "the excrement". Some claimed that it was a compliment, but others felt that those people must really be just excrementing them because they had never heard of such a compliment and if it was a compliment that it was an excrementty one. It went back and forth, got heated, and expletives were exchanged, and ultimately several people in the lounge actually died laughing IIRC.

And that's probably why silence is the golden excrement.
