Egyptian anti-government protesters sleep on the tires of a military tank stationed on Tahrir (Liberation) Square,
which for the past two weeks has been the center of a sit-in protest by thousands of Egyptians demanding the government step down from power.
Protesters created a human shield and barricades to fend off pro-Mubarak supporters from getting into the square
and to prevent the military from an overnight attack to clear the square from the protesters.

Demonstrations and strikes across Egypt
Workers, the unemployed and angry all took to the streets Tuesday demanding their rights and the removal of the country's ruling regime

Ahram Online, Tuesday 8 Feb 2011

...

Labour protests escalated in Suez with textile workers joining in and demonstrating with 2000 others demanding their right to work. Ali Fuad, a worker at the station, said: "We are having a sit-in today to demand our rights, which are in the text of the workers' law, our right to obtain the annual increase in salary which the management refuses to give us so we strike with all the laws that uphold the right of workers." Mohamed Abdel-Hakam factory, head of the factory syndicate, confirmed workers have continued their sit-in for a third day.

In the city of Suez itself, around 2000 youths demonstrated to demand the chance to work. Amid expectations of growing labour protests in Suez, officials from the local council have attempted to meet the protesters and end the crisis.

In Mahalla, more than 1500 workers of the Abu El-Subaa company in Mahalla demonstrated this morning, cutting the road, demanding their salaries and stating that it is not the first time. The workers have staged repeated sit-ins for two years as they demand their rights and mediation between the workers and the company's owner, Ismail Abu El-Subaa.

More than 2000 workers from the Sigma pharmaceutical company in the city of Quesna have gone on strike demanding higher wages and benefits that have been suspended for years. The workers are also calling for the dismissal of managers who have ill-treated workers.

8. The strikes are a big, big deal.
It's one thing to minimize and persecute protesters in Tahrir, but since the elites of the NDP and military derive much of their wealth and power from ownership of those industries, it's hard to imagine they'll tolerate it for long.

Large student protests in Algeria

afrol News, 8 February - University students in Algeria have started an "indefinite strike", denouncing the poor quality of teaching. Meanwhile, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is trying to stop the large protest marches announced for Saturday.

Students from several faculties in Algeria have decided to embark on an "indefinite strike", with manifestations in cities including Algiers, Oran, Tlemcen and Annaba. The students, according to the usually well-informed Algerian daily 'El Watan', principally are protesting the poor quality of education and a new qualification system, but are loosely connected to the general North African protest movement.

Following a presidential decree of December 2010, the formerly used "master" degree is now replaced by a "magisterial" degree, which also would mean that an engineer education will now end up with a title equivalent to a "professional education".

This seems to have been the last drop for Algerian student organisations, which already are complaining about the poor studying conditions and work possibilities faced in the country. Starting today, at least 500 students only in Algiers boycotted classes after announcing a large protest march to be organised tomorrow.

EGYPT: Freed Google executive Wael Ghonim joins protests

A young Google Inc. executive received a thunderous welcome when he joined a massive demonstration in Tahrir Square on Tuesday, the day after he was released from 12 days of detention, according to news reports from Cairo.

Many in the crowd said they were inspired by Wael Ghonim, who gave an emotional television interview Monday night in which he sobbed over those who have been killed in two weeks of clashes between protesters and security forces.

Ghonim, Google’s head of marketing for the Middle East and North Africa, administered a Facebook page that helped spark the uprising against President Hosni Mubarak's oppressive regime.

When he finished speaking, the crowd erupted in cheering, whistling and deafening applause, AP said.
