Steve Jobs killing the CD (on Robot Chicken)
It's funny because it's true.

1. Funny thing is I have a box of the dang things on the desk
and they are still alive. The reason they "died" is capacity... DVDs have that much more capacity. Blame Sony.

2. He'll be killing the DVD soon.
The next Macs are predicted to not come with optical drives at all. And Apple Stores are 'working towards eliminating boxed software' to focus on sales through the Mac App Store.

3. Have you gone to a windows store recently?
New programs, games in particular, are in quite the darth. This is not Jobs, this is the way ALL tech is going... to the cloud.

4. Yeah, I'll stop using optical drives
when pen drives are like 50 cents for four gigs

6. They're under ten bucks.
The latest MacBook Airs don't come with optical boot discs, they come with a flash drive.

8. $10 for how many gigs?
DVDs are still cheaper. Flash drives may be cool, but I'm on a budget. But I'm also behind the times... if that $10 gives you 80 gigs, then yes, I'll take that over the DVDs

9. Reality is that the move to the cloud has been ongong for
both OSs for a while

My Scrivener program is a cloud program... and so is Liquid Story binder. None of them are sold at your local store.

That is where it is moving... and yes my hubby hates it.

11. In some ways it could be a good trend for me
because I live in a foreign country... if I had to have everything mailed to me on a DVD, that would kind of suck. But at the same time, my bandwidth is just OK, and I can't afford better, so as much as possible being done on my own computer instead of the cloud is probably a good thing.

A lot of the cloudy workflow stuff that's coming out these days that I have to deal with in the translation/transcription/subtitling business is really lame... more of an obstacle than a tool. FTP's still an option, folks!

10. Personally I hate dealing with small media at all.
Our home server has a mirrored 4TB drive. Haven't burned a CD or DVD in a couple of years.

5. Ok, I'd really like to know why the unrecs.
I have a notion, but I'd like to hear from the non-coward unreccers who believe in their reasons.

12. I still buy tons of CDs
I don't think I'll ever stop buying them. I love actually holding them in my hands, reading their linear notes, and the satisfaction of playing an entire album from beginning to end because every song on it is part of a greater whole.
