Military Charity Event Featuring Sarah Palin Goes Bust
Military Charity Event Featuring Sarah Palin Goes Bust
Posted by: Mark @ 10:02 am

Sarah PalinSarah Palin has spent most of the past two years trying to polish her credentials as a super-patriot and portray herself as a supporter of American ideals and, especially, soldiers and veterans. But her popularity (or lack thereof) outside of the Tea Party is increasingly a source of embarrassment.

Last month the Sharon K. Pacheco Foundation celebrated their booking of Palin to headline their fundraising gala. However, the foundation just announced that the event has been canceled. They wrote in a Facebook post that…

“Due to an onslaught of personal attacks against Governor Palin and others associated with her appearance, it is with deep sadness and disappointment that, in the best interest of all, we cancel the event for safety concerns.”

On the surface that would seem to be an unfortunate circumstance that reflects poorly on Palin’s opponents. But further exploration of the facts suggests a somewhat different reason for the event’s failure.

First of all, the foundation’s post also noted that “no direct threats have been made against anyone,” and that the safety concerns arose “despite the call for civility in America,” in the aftermath of the shootings in Tucson. That’s ironic in that Palin was a critic of such calls for civility and regarded them as an attack on her and her right to free speech.

More significantly, the Denver Post reports that tickets for the event were not exactly in demand. They went on sale in January for $185.00. Two weeks later a $15.00 discount was offered. Last week the price was cut in half. Apparently Palin isn’t the draw she thinks she is. It is not known if Palin was to receive her customary $100,000.00 speaking fee, but it is clear that the foundation was struggling to fill seats.

3. I would prefer that any future news about her
be about how irrelevant she is to anything of any importance in our national debates and quest for solutions.

It seems that, the less attention we pay to her shenanigans and vapid talking points, the less of a histrionic thrill she will get when she Googles herself. The cult of personality brought her into fashion, so the less her ego is massaged, (and messaged) the less we have to contend with it.

Maybe "washed-up" is the term that would be nice to see in connection with her name.

4. Let's be careful about propagating Palin's vctimization stories...
This charity appears to be a fraud...From some of the comments at TPM:
This "foundation" is a bit sketchy. Its web page is hard to find--you have to go to its Facebook posting to find it.

Apparently Sharon was Leo's mother and was a child care provider who died in a car accident in 1991. This guy sounds like a self-promoter who raises a little money and has an "event" where he honors some soldier, but I doubt if any real money goes to soldiers. It is listed as an "uncategorized" 501c3 organization with IRS. I haven't been able to find any tax filings for it. From the website, it looks like he is using his church as a conduit for activities but I don't see anything about any funds being distributed.

From a blurb of his book "Joy Comes in the Mourning" at http://www.flipkart.com/joy-co...: "February 3, 1991 started off like any other day for Leo Pacheco, as he drove his mother, grandmother, and sister to the city for a day of shopping-a day filled with laughter and joy that would tragically end in heartache and sorrow." Sharon K. Brown Pacheco was born 19 July 1953 and is buried in the Fraser Valley Cemetery in Grand Co., Colorado.

5. Apparently the Foundation isn't even registered
There was another post about this, and the Pacheco Foundation isn't even registered in Colorado, and available records indicate they have or had about $2,000 to their name, hardly the stuff of a Sarah Palin Speaking Fee.

My takeaway is that this is some kind of fundraising pitch: "Poor, poor pitiful us! Personal attacks! Canceled event! Send us some money and Stand Up for America."
