Egyptian Revolution Tweets. We Won't Back Down, Part 2

Egyptian anti-government protesters sleep on the tires of a military tank stationed on Tahrir (Liberation) Square, which for the past two weeks has been the center of a sit-in protest by thousands of Egyptians demanding the government step down from power. Protesters created a human shield and barricades to fend off pro-Mubarak supporters from getting into the square and to prevent the military from an overnight attack to clear the square from the protesters.

Google Executive Emerges as Key Figure in Revolt

Wael Ghonim, Google Inc.

By MARGARET COKER in Cairo, NOUR MALAS in Dubai and MARC CHAMPION in Alexandria

...

During his disappearance, Mr. Ghonim, a father of two who is in his 30s, emerged as a central symbol of the antigovernment protests, cast as the face of a movement and hero in the cause of democracy. Protest organizers in Cairo's central Tahrir Square adopted him as a symbolic leader. Suspecting his arrest—but having no proof—they declared in speeches that they wouldn't leave the square until he was freed. Marchers carried homemade signs emblazoned with his name. At the same time, some local media suggested the political activities of Mr. Ghonim, who is Google's head of marketing for the Middle East and North Africa, make him a traitor to his nation.

On Sunday, Egyptian authorities broke the silence on Mr. Ghonim's fate, according to his brother, Hazem Ghonim. "They told us they'll probably bring him to us, and that he will likely be escorted by security," he said from Cairo.

Billionaire businessman Naguib Sawiris also said on Sunday that Egypt's vice president told him Mr. Ghonim would be released. "The boy is a hero," Mr. Sawiris said. "When he is released he will become the living hero of this revolution."

Mr. Ghonim is counted among a small group of political activists in Egypt whose social-media savvy over the past year helped spark the massive demonstrations threatening Egypt's ruling regime. "I said one year ago that the Internet will change the political scene in Egypt and some Friends made fun of me :)," Mr. Ghonim wrote on his personal Facebook profile for friends after two days of swelling protests in Cairo. The next day, Jan. 28, he disappeared.

...

Protesters sit outside a Cairo shop marked with the word 'Facebook.' The social media site's pages, including one run by Wael Ghonim, were a virtual headquarters for the protest movement

Corrections

Wael Ghonim is head of marketing for the Middle East and North Africa for Google, whose offices in the region are in Cairo and Dubai. An earlier version of this article incorrectly said Mr. Ghonim is Google's top executive in the region and that the Dubai office is the company's regional headquarters.

Kindly check your political views at the door.

Many of you have been calling and e-mailing asking for my "economic" view on what's happening, forecasted impact on the economy and what can be done.

I would much prefer to focus on the last point because worrying and fretting about impact is a useless excercise while exploring what we can do might actually have some good.

1) Regarding the campaign to invest 100 LE in the Egyptian Stock Market. In my humble opinion this is a minimum impact excercise, the only ones who stand to really gain are those seeking to currently exit the market and the brokerage companies. The money you invest goes into the pockets of previous owners of that stock, the company itself (whose stock you are buying) does not benefit. This money will not result in production or job generation, let alone any impact on the real economy.

Having said that, if you have liquidity to spare, this is actually an excellent time to invest in the stock market, you can buy low in the hope of selling high a little down the line when the stock market revives. So I'm not saying don't do it, just make sure you know why you are doing it.

2) Please, please, please ya3ny, for the Love of God, don't panic. Panic is bad. Read up on what happened to the Egyptian economy the last time there was a bank run. Moreover, the panic is unsubstantiated, the most respectable economist in the nation (I'm entitled to my opinion) Mr. Farouk El Okdah himself, assures you that your deposits are guarenteed. Your money isn't going anywhere, no need to try and widhraw it all. Lets make sure there is enough liquidity to go around to guarentee normal business operations.

3) Only buy dollars if they are essential for your business operations. I understand your fears, I do. You are forecasting a major appreciation of the dollar vis-a-vie the pound and double digit inflation in Egypt. Regarding the first point, the central bank is using its reserves to maintain the exchange rate as much as possible, while I too am forecasting some appreciation in the coming period, it won't be the mega jumps you are expecting or possibly hoping for. A stable exchange rate reflects very positively in the global arena and willl make recovery much faster once things are settled.

Meanwhile, for those fearing that their assets in the bank will lose value as the inflation rate continues to rise diminishing their purchasing power, you have some alternatives, if your current cash flow and liquidity levels allow it, you are looking for a hedge. Hedge funds are not prevalant in Egypt, you could opt to invest in the stock market (see the first bullet), you could opt to invest in commodities (this includes but is not limited to Gold and other metals), for the larger players you could opt to buy out business owners whom are trying to exit the market.

4) Support the small guy (hat-tip to Inji El Abd). For example, the fruits and vegetables in the market are very perishable, when you buy, buy from the small guy with the wooden carts on street corners rather than the hypermarkets of the world. For one, he needs the money more to sustain his family through the transitional phase. Second, they have better storage and refreigeration options and can bear the wait for a little longer.

5) Go local (those of you who have known me long are already bored of the request). Some of the non-Egyptian players in the market have temporarily relocated, some have withdrawn their funds and business for good. This has created an opportunity in the market (I realise that's an incredibly cup-half-full way to look at it). Yet the opportunities exist, this capacity can be taken over by players still in the market or by investors such as yourself. Support the local players, support those still in the market, buy their products, work at their establishment, make sure they churn a profit and pay wages and generate spending and further economic growth as the multiplier effect comes into play.
Some suggestions on local products here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=51852282115

6) Be fuel efficient. Limit the use of your motor vehicle, car pool, walk or bike.

7) Spend your vacations in Egypt. Tourism sector may have been hit for a while, but there is absolutely no reason why we Egyptians shouldn't take the opportunity to get to know our country better. Take a weekend at a city you've never been to, head to the coasts, go to the Red Sea, live it up, stay at the fancy hotels or the little ones, all of them could use the business and you would have a good time.

8) Plan your spending in the coming period, don't hoard food and other products, ensure equitable distribution of available produce until the logistics and retail sectors recover. Contemplate diverting some of your current savings into investments. If you are a business owner don't close your business, stay open, pay wages, bear a temporary loss, work on generating new business, confidence will create more confidence and spending will result in greater spending and will God's willing expedite economic recovery.

Good luck to us all.

Ahmed Basiony, a Cairo-born artist, experimental musician and teacher in his early thirties, was killed while participating in the first week of the January 25 uprising. Basiony is a husband and the father of two children, four-year-old Adam and several months year old Selma. He taught at the Art Education College at Helwan University, where he was pursuing his doctoral studies in the field of interactive arts and open source technology.

...

His influence across creative fields was felt not only through his practice but through his intellectual and teaching contribution. Supplementary to his formal teaching work he organized educational workshops for digital, live and sound art, enabling numerous young musicians to enter the field. “What he was doing with his music, performances, artwork and discussion had resonance with others and opened up thought for others,” says artist and musician Hassan Khan. His close friend and artist Shady Noshokaty says “he was a brave, funny man with an independent intellect and crazy energy; he put so much into everything he did, in his practice, as a person and in his teaching. This is a huge loss.”

Basiony’s last Facebook post said: “I have a lot of hope if we stay like this. Riot police beat me a lot. Nevertheless I will go down again tomorrow. If they want war, we want peace. I am just trying to regain some of my nation’s dignity.”

Ahmed Basiony died on January 28, the Friday of Anger. It is reported that the day prior to his death, he was severely beaten by Central Security Forces: he had been carrying a video camera. The day he died, he was separated from his friends at around 7PM. Several days later his body was found at the Um Al Masreyeen hospital in Giza. Hospital reports indicate he was shot five times, and run over by a vehicle. A Facebook “kolna Ahmed Basiony” has become a virtual memorial, where students, colleagues, friends, family and mentors share memories, anecdotes and prayers for him and his family.

The British Intelligence: The Egyptian Interior exploded the church
Posted by Phil Brennan on Feb 07, 2011 |

Editor's Note: My Arabic-speaking friend did this translation for me after alerting me to this information as Google Translate is so weak with Arabic. My friend is trustworthy.
Article exposing the Egyptian Government as being behind the terrorist atrocities against Coptic Christians. Translated from the Original Arabic.

Tayyar.org | 7 February 2011:

A British diplomat revealed before the Chambers of the French Palace, Elysee, the reason for the insistence of England to demand the departure of the Egyptian President and his team, especially the Ministry of Interior, which was administered by the Minister Habib Al-Adli, the reason is that British intelligence confirmed, from audio and paper Egyptian official documents , that the sacked Egyptian Interior Minister Habib Al-Adli had formed six years ago, a special body run by 22 officers, and consists of some members of Islamic groups, which spent years in the prisons of the Interior ministry, number of drug dealers, teams of security companies, and number of registered risk of ex-offenders, who were divided into groups according to geographical regions and political affiliation, this body is able to be a comprehensive sabotage all over Egypt in case the regime is subjected to any threat.

The British intelligence also revealed that Major Fathi Abdel Wahed, who is close to the former Minister Habib Al-Adli, started on 11 December to prepare “Ahmed Mohamed Khaled” (who spent eleven years in the prisons of the Egyptian Interior Ministry) for the connect to a radical Egyptian group, as to push it to hit Saints Church in Alexandria. Ahmed al-Khalid succeeded in making contacts to a radical movement in Egypt, its name (Jundullah), and told her that he has equipment which he got from Gaza, that could explode the Church in order to “discipline the Copts". Muhammad Abd al-Hadi (leader of Jundullah) liked the idea, and recruited an element named Abdul Rahman Ahmed Ali. Abdul Rahman was told that he will park the car, which will explode on its own later, but Major Fathi Abdul Wahid himself was the one who exploded the car remotely, by wireless device, and before Abdel-Rahman Ahmed Ali the victim could step out of the car.

...

Soon after that, the pilot himself went to the named Ahmed Khalid, and asked him to call the head of Jundullah group Mohamed Abdel-Hadi, to go to one of the apartments in Alexandria, to discuss the results. When both met in an apartment in El Shaheed Abdel Moneim Riad street in Alexandria, pilot Fathi arrested them and immediately transported them to Cairo by a very modern ambulance. Within two hours and a half, he arrived to a special building that belongs to the interior ministry in the area of Giza in Cairo, where he made reservations on Monday until the uprising last Friday, and after they were able to escape, they resorted to the British embassy in Cairo in order to preserve their integrity. The British diplomat said that the decision of bombing the church came from the Egyptian regime for several reasons including:
1- Pressure exerted on the system inside Egypt and abroad, in the Arab and Islamic world for its continued blockade of Gaza City, so the indictment of the Gazan (Army of Islam) to conduct the operation is a kind of call on Egyptians to accuse the "militants" in Gaza to sabotage Egypt, thus winning a kind of national unity on the existing regime, and deluding the outside world that the regime is protecting the Christians.

2- Give a gift to the Hebrew regime in Tel Aviv, to continue the siege on Gaza, and to prepare for a major operation on it. The Egyptian gifts to the Zionist entity comes so that Israel's leaders continue to support the nomination of Gamal Mubarak to the presidency of Egypt in all parts of the world.

3- Spread a kind of lid on the Egyptian regime in Egypt that authorizes it to move from the fever of rigging the elections to accuse Islamists in extremism and attacks on Christians, so that the regime gets Western legitimacy to the fraudulent election results, and the right to arrest his opponents, as happened after the incident, where the number of Islamist detainees was more than Four thousands.

Prinz Chaos - LIBERATION SQUARE (Song)

Songwriter Prinz Chaos II. from Germany was quick to fire out this Song about Tahrir-Square in Cairo. Speed was more important than technical perfection... Like at Tahrir!! Forward the Egyptian Revolution! The options are not limited to Western-Style "democracy" or a regime of religious fanatics. Try something new. Push open the door for a better future for all people, for social equality, peace and liberty for every kind of culture and identity.

Lyrics:

Liberation Square

Remember this day, so far away
Like 1919
Millions strong, singing this song
Of a Century without Fear!
Tahrir, Tahrir - Liberation Square!
Hope & Rebellion
Dancing through the night!

Global Cairo Nightlife
Liberation Square on fire!
New Morning over Arabia
As you stand your ground
Stand your ground!
Tahrir,Tahrir! Liberation Square
Masses of People -
Tahrir, Tahrir, Liberation Square
Dancing through the night!

But then came the horses and then came the whips
And the knifes and the thugs and the cops
There were people crying and people dying
Iron Barricades springing up
Tahrir! Tahrir! Liberation Square!
Under attack!
Tahrir! Tahrir! Liberation Square!
Beautiful Egyptian Youth! - Fighting back!

Global Cairo Nightlife
Liberation Square on Fire
The World Web Web praying for you!
As the night turned darker and black
Defend your ground, Liberation Square!
Masses of People -
Defend your ground, one more bloody night!
On Roof Tops, Streets and: Underground...

Confusion in the Pentagon!
Octoberbrigde! Stone after Stone!
Molotow Cocktails, Gun Fire and Medicine
Those Hero Ladies, fighting on
Tanks in Tears! Hair in the storm!
And one Muslim brother is telling another,
quite secretly: you and me...
my love - - - !

Global Cairo Nightlife
Liberation Square on fire!
Permanent Revolution!
As you stand your ground
Expand your ground!
Tahrir, Tahrir, Liberation Square!
Prophets and Parasites
Tahrir, Tahrir, Liberation Square!
Masses of People!
Tahrir, Tahrir, Liberation Square!
Happy Streetkids, everywhere!
Tahrir, Tahrir, Liberation Square!
Workers and Students!
Tahrir, Tahrir, Liberation Square!
Tahrir, Tahrir, Liberation Square!

U.S. Should Take a Back Seat in Egypt
NATHAN FIELD | BIO | 07 FEB 2011
BRIEFING

Over the course of the two-week-old protests in Egypt, the American media has been consumed with debate over how the U.S. government should react. An emerging consensus across the political spectrum argues that President Barack Obama should support the protesters' demand that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resign immediately. This view was prominently expressed in an open letter to Obama by dozens of well-known scholars of Middle East politics, who advised him to essentially abandon 30 years of strong support for the Mubarak regime by throwing in America's lot with the protest movement.

Such a step would not clearly serve American interests and has too many potential negative repercussions. Instead, the U.S. should quietly but forcefully encourage the Mubarak regime to follow through with its commitments to reform, while making clear that the U.S. will continue to support it in the run-up to next September's presidential election.

First, there are too many unknowns about where the Egyptian people as a whole stand to justify reversing 30 years of policy. Without question, the protests have shown that most Egyptians want reform, although it remains vaguely defined, and some of the most vocal protesters want Mubarak to resign immediately. Beyond that, however, the situation is unclear. If at the high point of the protests 1 million people filled Cairo's Tahrir Square, on most days the turnout was significantly less. Many of those who stayed at home are probably as opposed to Mubarak as the protesters, but it's also clear that a significant number of Egyptians continue to support him. There simply is not enough evidence to suggest that the protesters' demand that Mubarak leave office immediately represents a majority opinion.

Second, U.S. policymakers should not be swayed by heat-of-the-moment characterizations that paint the entire Mubarak regime with a broad brush as a corrupt dictatorship. Some senior leaders of the ruling National Democratic Party have certainly used their positions to enrich themselves, and members of the security forces have committed human rights abuses. However, the Egyptian regime does not consist of just the Mubarak family and a few dozen of his cronies, but rather of hundreds of thousands of civil servants, many of whom are competent and genuinely concerned with solving Egypt's problems. One cannot neatly call for Mubarak's sudden removal without risking a wider collapse of Egypt's governing structure, something that is definitely not in American interests.
