Brett Favre was at one point given a lot of admiration, loved by his adopted city of Green Bay. But he began to think that he WAS the whole reason the Packers won Super Bowls. He ignored the whole idea of a team. So, when he felt insulted, he chose to seek out people that would confirm his delusions, to make him feel like the young God that he never quite was. He wound up making a fool of himself, acting like a teenager, making a point to treat women like crap, even as he had a wife that loved him. As far as success, he wound up running into the one truth that Football teaches: it is not just about the star players that make big plays, it is about the TEAM, going from your fellow players, to the fans whose pennies make your dollars.
Now, Brett is disgraced, watching other people make the plays he wishes he could, and enjoying the glory he wishes he could. The world has gone on without him. They have gotten the Super Bowl without him. He had a chance to become an elder statesmen, to parlay the affection into business, broadcasting, or coaching, like many other former warriors have done. Let's be real honest, if he did not try to antagonize Green Bay by trying to help their enemies, he would still enjoy good will there, enough to have become a mayor, senator or governor. But he has spent all his good will, because he could not conceive of success as anything but the raw, brute clobbering on a battlefield.
