Hole-in-the-floor ashtray apparently leads to fire

Associated Press February 2, 2011

An official in Portland, Ore., says a house fire that caused $30,000 in damage was apparently started by tenants who were using a hole in the floor as an ashtray.

Portland Fire & Rescue spokesman Paul Corah says, in his words, "That's not careless smoking, that's stupid smoking."

He says the caller who reported the fire Wednesday also hung up on the 911 dispatcher, then refused to talk when the dispatcher tried to call back for more details.

1. I wonder at what point this seemed like a good plan?
On second thought, I don't care to know

2. Back in a former life, I was a property mananger. And when the toilet broke in one apartment
well, let's just say that the same type of thinking applied.

And it took me 4 months to evict those assholes...

5. I've cleaned enough rental units to know
this is sadly typical behavior.

6. I used to own some rental property, best move I ever made was to get
rid of it ... I managed to have wonderful tenants, but the application process was dreadful, having to try to sort out good tenants without a HUD problem. It's such a shame. There are wonderful tenants, but among them are some really bad ones, and the margins aren't that great in renting out places.

Maybe the big guys make lots of money, but for small property owners it's often by the seat of the pants trying to make all the bills and to survive. And then a bad tenant can set you back several thousand just like that.
