The employment gap between the educated and uneducated is incredible
http://www.businessinsider.com/gap-between-unemployment-among-educated-and-those-not-educate-2011-2

A remarkable stat from the BLS report:

The unemployment rate for those with less than a high-school diploma is 14.2%.
The unemployment rate for those with a college degree is 4.2%.

1. Our overlords are getting highly degreed professionals to flip their burgers
What a good deal for them!

8. Nah, it's just a sign that the economy is bad for everyone.
If you've got a burger joint and a job opening at the front register, are you going to hire the guy with the bachelors (which means that he passed at least basic math classes), or the guy with only a high school diploma (which, in many parts of the country, merely means that he showed up often enough to avoid getting kicked out)? The bachelors assures you that the applicant has at least achieved a minimal educational standard, while the high school degree is assurance of...well...nothing.

The problem with our jacked up economy is that we have college graduates applying for burger flipper jobs because they can't find anything better. The high school graduates can barely compete against them, and the dropout/GED students don't have a chance.

2. These must be national figures.
In Silicon Valley the unemployment rate for college educated workers is probably much higher. The percentage of college grads is +40% and the unemployment rate is +13%, TTBOMK. And it doesn't take into account the degreed burger flippers.

4. Lots of us over 50 are unemployed with no hope of a job.
I have lots of friends who are baby boomers, with master's and doctorate degrees and no jobs.

5. A high school diploma is required for almost any job
Even places that hire high school students part time think that there is something wrong with adults without high school diplomas.
Although some businesses consider people with college degrees "overqualified", usually someone with a college degree is considered qualified for more jobs than someone without a degree. That doesn't mean the job that they will get will pay well.
