Ricin removed from Coventry home

COVENTRY — A substance removed for testing by the FBI Jan. 25 from a home on South Main Street tested positive as ricin, a toxic substance.

FBI officials made the announcement Jan. 28 after tests on the substance were completed.

The material was taken from the home Jan. 25 after local officials received information Jan. 24 about possible hazardous material located in the home. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office and fire departments from Coventry, Green, New Franklin, Lakemore and Springfield responded to close off South Main Street while the FBI’s Hazardous Material Response Unit from Quantico, Va., and the Hazardous Response Team in Pittsburgh entered the home wearing protective gear to remove the material.

The substance, a small amount that was found in a coffee can in a refrigerator, was sent to the National BioForensics Analysis Center (NBAC) Laboratory in Maryland, according to FBI officials.

“The NBAC lab has come back with their findings and the sample submitted has in fact tested positive for ricin,” said FBI officials in a press release. “Ricin is a toxin that is derived from the castor bean and can be deadly if ingested, inhaled or injected.”

6. They must not have taken it too seriously. They waited
3 days to make a "more thorough search", after they had test results. No other substance was found? The guy was not in custody during those 3 days. If he had other things like that he probably would move or get rid of them.

FBI officials conducted a second, more thorough search of the Coventry home Jan. 28, which resulted in another road closure in the area. FBI Special Agent Scott Wilson said no other substance was found.

“The second search was done to ensure the safety of the public,” he added. “Some items of interest were taken out of the home for further testing.”
