Kansas inmates place order for 942 large pizzas
HUTCHINSON, Kan. | Two Pizza Huts in Hutchinson knew they'd be busy on Super Bowl Sunday, but not this busy: They're splitting a to-go order for more than 900 large pizzas and 9,600 chicken wings.

The order, which will cost more than $11,000, is part of a fundraiser for the Hutchinson Correctional Center's planned Spiritual Life Center. The prison will be getting 942 large, hand-tossed pizzas at $8 apiece and will charge inmates $11, with about $3,000 going toward the center.

The order also includes 9,630 wings — boneless to minimize the security risk.

The Hutchinson News reported that only inmates with good behavioral records got the chance to order pizza and chicken wings for Sunday.

2. Pizza Hut? Why punish the inmates that way.
It's tantamount to torture.

9.  Pizza Hut is the only pizza place that will deliver to my school in the urban core
Maybe they are also the only pizza place willing to deliver to a prison.

12. The prison is only about 50 miles from the original Pizza Hut.
Maybe the prisoners are aware of the history and are Wichita-centric.

8. It's too bad they're not capable of making ...
... their own pizza. They could make much better pizza for far less $8 each.

11. Nobody makes their own pizza on Superbowl Sunday.
This is a good step in reintegrating these guys. You order food today and watch the game.

15. Why is a public prison planning to build a "Spiritual Life Center"?
Edited on Mon Feb-07-11 12:58 AM by Jim Lane
I think it's a bit questionable to fund-raise off the inmates for any purpose -- the State incarcerates them, meaning they can't get (or make) their own pizza, then exploits that status by selling them pizza at a profit.

Putting that aside, along with the issue of Pizza Hut versus Papa Johns, the linked article says that the prison's profit will go toward a planned Spiritual Life Center. That sounds like they're putting a Christian outpost in a public prison. Somehow I don't think the Spiritual Life Center will include Satanism or the FSM -- and even if it did, I as an agnostic would object. The Establishment Clause means that the state can't favor religion (generally) over nonreligion.

Maybe they're planning to finance the whole thing without taxpayer funds, by combining voluntary donations with what they can rip off from the inmates. Even if they are, it's still unconstitutional. They're giving religion preferred access to a public facility, and the ability to rip off the inmates this way is a public asset; if it's to be used at all, then the proceeds of its use come under the Establishment Clause.

good behavior?

Restricted my finances by not paying beer and travel money due? then carrot with perks? fuck that, going to royally fuck things up, burn it down, crush it, teach it, whatever it takes. Because they will be the people in prison, because I didn't do wrong.

So if I was in prison, it would be because of injustice. As is the case from the smear, They can keep perks. And I got something for them, hows the last years been?
