Al Jazeera update 30 minutes later (now): gas pipeline to Jordan attacked in northern sinai . Pipeline to Israel not affected.

Update; Egypt State TV states it was a *gas leak*, not terrorists. Stories from different countries involved contradict each other right now.

Egyptian army, demonstrators stand off in Tahrir Square
By Ivan Watson, CNN

February 5, 2011 -- Updated 1714 GMT (0114 HKT)

Protesters line up against Egyptian military tanks at an entrance to Tahrir Square on Saturday.

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Opposition activists formed a human chain outside one of the entrances to Tahrir Square on Saturday afternoon to prevent two Egyptian military tanks from crossing through barricades into what has effectively become an anti-Mubarak enclave in the heart of the Egyptian capital.

An eyewitness said scuffles broke out after an army general asked demonstrators to take down their makeshift barricades of corrugated steel and debris, which were built up during 48 hours of bloody fighting with regime supporters next to Cairo's landmark Egyptian Museum.

"This general went through the barricades, they knocked down some barricades on the way to the museum, which caused some panic and scuffling," said photographer Ron Haviv. "When he did it all chaos broke loose."

Haviv said that initial tension was defused after Gen. Hassan Al Roweni began negotiating with medics who have established a first aid station for wounded combatants just behind the first line of barriers.
"He is still talking to doctors at the clinic," Haviv said. "He is asking them to remove the clinic."
Later, Roweni made a tour of Tahrir.

Egypt army seeks to free Tahrir Square for traffic

By Marwa Awad
CAIRO | Sat Feb 5, 2011 11:58am EST

...

There was a mixed reaction from protesters, who have had cordial relations with the military during the 12 days of unprecedented demonstrations in a country for long ruled with an iron fist and harsh security policies.

"The regime is playing the economic card. They're saying people are losing money, not getting their pay, etc. Yes, there are losses but that's the price we have to pay for three decades of passivity," said Omar Rayes, a 15-year-old student.

"Hosni Mubarak and the government trivialize the needs of the nation," said Mostafa Atteya, 29-year-old financial manager. "Even if only a quarter of a million people are expressing a demand, their needs must be respected. The political stupidity the regime practices heightens people's animosity."

...

"The army is doing the job of the NDP," said Sayyid Hamdy, referring to Mubarak's ruling National Democratic Party. "It wants to separate the protesters, it wants to make Tahrir look like it's back to normal so that the world thinks the protesters have been satisfied and left the square."

They searched the ZDF bags and found much more than just a camera. “We have a woman with a German passport of Arab origin and an American in a car with camera, satellite equipment and $10,000,” he said. “This is very suspicious. I think they need to be checked.”

Anxiety turned to anticipation when we were driven to a military base. The military had been the closest thing Egypt had to a guarantor of stability and we thought once we explained who we were and provided documentation we would be allowed to go to our hotel.

In a strange exchange that only made sense later, Ms. Mekhennet asked a soldier, “Where are you taking us?” The soldier answered: “My heart goes out to you. I’m sorry.”

Ms. Mekhennet asked her interrogator, “Where are we?” The interrogator answered, “You are nowhere.”

The NDP shuffle
By Issandr El Amrani February 5, 2011 at 6:53 PM

This morning I was on BBC Radio 4's Today show. The guest ahead of me was Dr. Ibrahim Kamel, CEO of Kato, member of the NDP's Politburo and one of Gamal Mubarak's most ardent and vocal backer until two weeks ago. On the show he strongly defended Hosni Mubarak and said the government would now engage in reform, which he welcomed. I don't recall him being an advocate for political reform two weeks ago.

...

In part of the ongoing coup carried out by Omar Suleiman and his army buddies (with Mubarak remaining as a fig leaf so it is not seen as such) they need a new political class. Badrawy has class, money and social clout. He is sleek and shiny. Another former Gamal acolyte who is staying on is Muhammad Kamal, a smart political science professor who obtained his PhD at John Hopkins. I don't think a lot of Egyptians will have such selective amnesia as to forget where they stood before.

Meanwhile, the scapegoats are already being created. People against who there has been a five-year press campaign, such as Ahmed Ezz, have had their assets seized and may be under arrest. I'm sure Ezz is no angel, but having him (and people that I believe are pretty respectable like Youssef Boutros-Ghali and Rachid Mohamed Rachid) scapegoated while others (notably generals dealing in big land deals) escape unscathed is ridiculous and dishonest. All of this reinforces my feeling that we are in the middle of a slow-moving coup, and possibly one planned for a long time.

Cairo's Tahrir Square: From traffic headache to revolutionary icon

Photographed by AFP

...

Besides the thousands camping around the square for the past few days, the square speaks the revolution. A large piece of cloth was rolled on the façade of a facing building. “Our Demands,” it reads, listing seven points, starting with Mubarak’s ouster and moving on to an interim government free of any figures associated with the current regime. The list of demands also includes the dissolution of parliament, an investigation into the violence waged against protesters on 29 January, a new constitution, the end of the emergency law and free elections.

The list of demands on the building’s façade overlooks the popular organization going on in the square: intermittent garbage collection rounds, food and water procurement and distribution, a media center, and a field hospital. Music, poetry and graffiti are all forms of on-site entertainment in the square. In hundreds of pockets, groups gathered here and there to honor the fallen, speak politics, remember the past, and ponder the future.

...

For activist Mohamed Kalfat, the square should remain a symbol of liberation. “This is a place where we fought battles, spilled blood, and talked politics at night," he says. "It should be opened up as a festive pedestrian area on 25 January of every year to commemorate these days."

Kalfat is one of thousands who fiercely fought to hold the square on 29 January, when pro-Mubarak thugs stormed the square with batons and Molotov cocktails. When he woke up the following day to see that all his friends were still in possession of the square, he realized the scope of the people's revolution. “But the revolution should spread everywhere, not just Tahrir,” he says.
