"Lawrence O'Donnell Soundly Defeated By Parker-Spitzer"
Ratings: Amid Major News, MSNBC’s New Primetime Lineup Drops To Third

“On a week marked by a huge international story–and hefty NBC resources committed to telling it–MSNBC marked an unpleasant milestone, dropping to third place across primetime on February 1. In perhaps the most striking defeat for the network, Lawrence O’Donnell, who took over for the departed Keith Olbermann was soundly defeated by CNN’s Parker Spitzer, a show assumed by many to be such a poor performer as to be on the chopping block.

On Tuesday night, Parker Spitzer attracted 292,000 viewers 25-54, compared to O’Donnell’s 196,000.

CNN newcomer Piers Morgan, whose show Piers Morgan Tonight has had several ups and downs in its first two weeks, finished strongly ahead of MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow (327,000 to 260,000). Morgan broke from single-interview format to cover the Egypt story live, and interviewed former British prime minister Tony Blair.”…cont…

1. So? It seems like some people are actually happy that the liberal channel is going thru tough times.

3. If they were liberal
KO would still be on at 8.00pm

5. I agree - I miss KO a great deal, but we still have Rachel, LO, Cenk and Ed...

8. Truth Doesn't Necessarily Make One Happy
However we could've told them. There was a reason so many people signed that petition. Further, for bean counters, they determinedly ignored the numbers. Overall KO had the best numbers exp. in the demo and thus was an excellent lead-in for Rachel.

2. Propaganda vs. Profits
the best way to destroy a liberal media outlet is to own it.

Paraphrasing Economist William K. Black

What Comcast may end up doing to our formerly wonderful MSNBC with Keith has nothing to do with running a profitable business.

Catapult the propaganda!

6. I can practically hear Dan Abrams giggling with glee
I like Larry. He's still working out the kinks but when he latches on to something, like he did with the Arizona shooting and gun control, he is a force to be reckoned with.

Of course I miss Keith but that doesn't mean I have to hate the man who is in his time slot.

9. It's because Keith is no longer on.
Lawrence is kind of boring and the music he has on is kind of awful (I can't hear some of what he is saying because the music is too loud).

I do like Cenk (sp?). He is always surprising me. And Rachel can explain the most complex idea in the simplest terms. I like Ed, but I'm usually asleep when he comes on anymore.

I'm afraid MSNBC and Comcast are doing to their liberal line-up what Air America managers did to Air America. They just don't know how to manage a liberal line-up. It's not like stupefying conservative news and opinion. You can't manage a liberal line-up like you would manage a conservative line-up.

With Fox they tell their ignorant fools for commentators and news readers, what, when and how to present their lies. They control practically everything that comes out of their mouths and then pretend like it's news.

But liberals like the truth, all the truth and some serious intelligent conversation and opinion. Give liberals all the details and the nuance. Conservatives just want the talking points. Liberals want it all so they can make up their mind for themselves. If you get a liberal to seriously think about what a commentator says, then you have a loyal viewer.

That's why Keith was so popular. He made you think.

Lawrence tries but he's just not Keith.

10. Some of this rating drop could be attributed to the Egypt crisis. CNN
is-I think- more qualified and has more resources to cover a story like this. It is a shame O'Donnell, and Maddow are losing ratings-I like them both.

11. Parker-Spitzer sucks! CNN itself sucks...
I can't watch Parker-Spitzer,they bore me to death. In fact the only CNN I can occasionally take is AC360 when Anderson is covering things like Egypt or New Orleans.

I'm giving Lawrence O'Donnell some time to get his footing. He is too centrist for me but he is better than any of the others in that time slot.

I do miss Keith though! It will be hard for anyone to fill Keith's shoes.

13. One of the problems is the Tweety-peat at 7.
MSNBC should have given 7 to Ed and let Tweety repeat at 10.

15. Glen Greenwald
I'm still mad at Lawrence for his on air spat with Glen Greenwald over some historical fact.

Comcast doesn't seem to be interested in maximizing their return to shareholders, or else they never would have let Keith go!

17. Schuster sat in for Bill Press on the radio one morning this week
I woke up with the pillow speaker in place and I couldn't believe my ears. Is it? Could it be? It is! :D

DS was excellent on the radio. He actually sounded like he was an old radio pro handling the pace very well. And, of course, he was his old self putting the guests and callers through his articulate slice 'n dice with a bit humor.

time but MSNBC would never give it to him.

21. The would never put Shuster on but they should've
just put Cenk into KOs time and left everybody else in the time that they were already in. Shifting them all around totally messed up the flow. They've completely taken the enjoyment out of all the shows for me. :argh:

23. I could live with that but Cenk just seems like such a nice teddybear.

That timeslot needs someone who can be sort of ass-holeish towards those with opposing viewpoints.
It was always funny to watch substitute anchors doing worst persons. It didn't have the same effect.

Shuster has a certain amount of courage he would demonstrate in his old afternoon show.
Yet he was 100% pro when he convered breaking stories like Michael Jackson.

Out of all the substitutes that did countdown, DS was the best.

19. I switched over to Spitzer myself
I don't like O'Donnell especially with guests like Baba Wawa that he's been having. I also find him just too bland and elitist for my taste. I have also been leaving on Morgan because of his Egypt coverage.

24. O'Donnell's identity is that of the capitol hill insider and I don't think KO viewers like it.
Lawrence sees things through the lens of his capitol hill experiences, but viewers don't want an insider. They want someone who can rail against pols, Lawrence makes too many excuses for bad policy.

25. they should have put rachel at 8 and ed at 9 and left O'donnell at 10.
But I pretty much have given up on cable news.

Watch a tiny bit when there is big news.
