........which I know conservatives are really big on, right? They want everyone ELSE to take personal responsibility, but why should THEY not have to take personal responsibility for THEIR beliefs? My solution forces EVERYONE to take personal responsibility.
If I were King, my new legislation would go something like this. You want to outlaw abortions? Fine. They're out. Totally and completely illegal in EVERY instance. But, as your mother told you when you were young, ain't nothin's for free, and you have to give something to get something. So here's what YOU, the people who want to outlaw abortion, are going to GIVE in exchange for getting what you want.
If you're against abortion, you sign your name to a petition that will be kept in a secure location. Everyone who signs the petition will be given credit for the coup of getting abortions outlawed in this country. However, here's what ELSE you're gonna get. When we need extra money to house, clothe, feed, and educate all these unwanted children, ONLY YOUR taxes will be raised. YOU will be supporting all the unwanted children you want to force other people to have. Hey, it goes hand in hand, folks. You want children be born, somebody's gotta pay for them. I mean, what good is it to make sure they pass safely through the birth canal if you're just going to kill them with malnutrition and neglect as soon as they're out, right? It's a small price to pay for a "culture of life," though, isn't it?
Oh, but I'm not done. All these unwanted children need PARENTS, don't they? They need someone to house them, raise them, and care for them until they're adults, don't they. Well, when our orphanages are filled to capacity, guess what we'll do. We'll go BACK to that list (the petition you signed to enforce your deeply-held beliefs--your superior morals--on everyone else). And when unwanted children need homes, guess who's going to get a lovely bundle of joy delivered directly to his/her front door, complete with custody paperwork. Now THAT'S what I call taking personal responsibility for your beliefs.
My only question is: once my new legislation goes into effect, how many signatures do you think will be on that petition? Why, I'd venture to say that you'd see people suddenly switching over and espousing the virtues of Choice by the millions. See, personal responsibility is a nice cudgel to hit OTHER PEOPLE with, but it kinda smarts when it gets turned against YOU.
