Egyptian Revolution Tweets February 3 2010 Crackdown Part 6
Thread 5 here http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x341234

Compare these two articles.
CAIRO — Whipped up by state television and spoiling for a fight, thousands of supporters of President Hosni Mubarak flooded into the center of Egypt’s capital Wednesday, sparking violent clashes that shifted the momentum in a political confrontation that has gripped the region and the world.

    www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/02/AR2011020203035.html?wprss=rss_print
CAIRO — President Hosni Mubarak struck back at his opponents on Wednesday, unleashing waves of his supporters armed with clubs, rocks, knives and firebombs in a concentrated assault on thousands of antigovernment protesters in Tahrir Sqaure calling for an end to his authoritarian rule … The crackdown was in defiance of calls by the United States and Europe to avoid violence … The Mubarak supporters emerged from buses. They carried the same flags and the same printed signs, and they all escalated their actions, from shouting to violence, at exactly the same moment: 2:15 p.m. The protesters showed journalists police and ruling party identification cards which they said had been taken from Mubarak supporters who had been caught infiltrating Tahrir Square, also known as Liberation Square, and detained in a holding pen.

27. Senate expected to pass resolution calling on Hosni Mubarak to begin transfer of power in Egypt
The Senate is expected to pass a resolution addressing the crisis in Egypt, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, John Kerry (D-Mass.), told reporters Thursday evening.

According to Kerry, the resolution would call on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak "to begin the process of the transfer of power and create a caretaker effort" of which Mubarak himself could or could not be a part, depending on what the Egyptian people ultimately decide.

"We want them to make that kind of choice and not narrow the options here," Kerry said. "But the key here is to respect people's rights, to end the violence, to provide an opportunity for this transfer, and to begin to pull Egypt out of this chaotic confrontation and begin to embrace the aspirations of the people."

Kerry said that he expected the resolution would pass unanimously.

They must not be liking the backlash and the boycott too much. Everyone in Egypt is changing carriers and requesting international solidarity on this.

By RAPHAEL G. SATTER, Associated Press – Thu Feb 3, 3:16 pm ET

LONDON – Egyptian authorities forced Vodafone to broadcast pro-government text messages during the protests that have rocked the country, the U.K.-based mobile company said Thursday.

Micro-blogging site Twitter has been buzzing with screen grabs from Vodafone's Egyptian customers showing text messages sent over the course of the demonstrations against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year-old regime.

A text message received Sunday by an Associated Press reporter in Egypt appealed to the country's "honest and loyal men to confront the traitors and criminals and protect our people and honor." Another urged Egyptians to attend a pro-Mubarak rally in Cairo on Wednesday. The first was marked as coming from "Vodafone." The other was signed: "Egypt Lovers."

In a statement, Vodafone Group PLC said that the messages had been drafted by Egyptian authorities and that it had no power to change them.
