I was up most of the night watching Heroes on live TV
The Egyptian citizens who held out through the night to hold onto their position inside Liberation Square saved their Revolution. They showed incredible courage facing down the hoards of armed thugs who were more than willing to maim and kill them to route the Revolution from the heart of the nation. They faced fire, bricks, knives, and guns. In doing so they faced down the shadowy leading edge of a security apparatus that has held the Egyptian people in bondage for decades, and they did so with the sacrifice of life and the burden of multiple horrendous wounds. They did so in the dark, they did so isolated with no hope of mercy from their enemies and no chance of reinforcements from their allies. They held their ground and when the light of dawn arrived it shown on a determined resistance, bloodied but now bowed, holding high their banners of freedom in the heart of the Egyptian nation.

Had Mubarak's thugs broken their spirits and not just the bodies of hundreds of those heroes, had the forces of repression prevailed and spread forth into that sacred square under the cover of night,it would be the regime today holding the upper hand over the people of Egypt. Under the pretense of preventing further violence, the Army would have cleared that Square and closed it off from all of the people. There would no longer be a gathering point nor focal point for the world to watch and support the emergence of a new Egyptian nation. But because of a diverse band of Egyptian heroes, male and female, young and old, by the dawn's early light a different image emerged. The world saw the grace and strength of the Egyptian people. The world awoke to heroes who gave proof through the night that the fight for the rights of all people to justice and equality will never be abandoned. They were standing proud, with their banners still there.

1. me too...
The gun advocates think them fools. But, the rest of the world knows what REAL courage is. Peaceful protest against the odds has more power than any armed guerilla movement could ever achieve.

2. Fiction and reality
Last night was absolutely riviting, stark and primal in the power of watching those forces collide. I just this second realized what I was doing in the hours prior to logging online and watching those scenes online. Friends had given us a gift for Christmas. It was a new Lord of the Rings board game. It's beutiful and complex. Before trying to play it, Janet and I decided to rewatch the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Last night we saw the conclusion of Part !!, the Two Towers. The forces of the fellowship were trapped and surrounded by a sea of orcs as they fought through the night for their lives and freedom, only to emerge triumphant with the first light of dawn when Gandolf arrived with reenforcements to relieve them.

Wow, fiction and reality entwined, the forces are primal.

3. Did other DUers find it near impossible to stop watching the Square last night?
What were you feeling while you watched?

4. When I was watching last night I heard many gun shots
but didn't know for sure how many if any were aimed at the protesters. They of course knew more than I did, three protesters where shot in the head, almost certainly by snipers. It would have been so understandable for them to panic and flee.
