Senator DeMint lying on the Senate floor.
Edited on Wed Feb-02-11 12:53 PM by itsallhappening
I was just watching CSPAN-2 and Senator DeMint said, "Already Medicare is broke and can't pay doctors to see patients."

Well, I'm a constituent, so I called his Washington office. (By the way, that's 202-224-6121.)

The young lady who answered the phone listened to me explain what I had just seen and heard. I said I'd like to talk to someone who can back up those claims.

She said, "Whose quote was that? Obama's?"

I had to explain to her that, no, it wasn't President Obama's quote. It was Senator DeMint's comment, which is why I'm calling Senator DeMint's office. She put me on hold for a few minutes, came back and told me that a staffer said that DeMint was referring to the entire program and the need to fix it.

That made no sense, so I explained it to her again and said that the staffer who told her what to say didn't really answer the question. I said that health care is a major issue facing this country and whether we retain the current law, make adjustments to it or scrap it and start over (whatever the case) it will be impossible to address the issue if my Senator is on the floor of the Senate not telling the truth.

She transferred me to a staffer who answers health care questions. It went right to his voice-mail. I left my name, number and city, quoted Senator DeMint again and then said I'd like someone to call me and explain both parts of that comment.

1) If Medicare is broke, why did the 2010 Trustees report (http://www.ssa.gov/oact/trsum/index.html) say that the program is solvent until 2029, twelve years later than the 2009 report predicted?

2) Who are these doctors who are seeing patients on the promise of being reimbursed by Medicare and then not being reimbursed by Medicare?

I'm sure I'll get a call. Sure.

EDIT: typo

2. Hope nobody trips over him.
But seriously, he's one of the biggest assholes in Congress, even considering he has a lot of competition. Good for you for calling his office, not that you should hold your breath waiting for a response

5. Keep in mind that Congress members generally will not respond if you are not their constituent.
I couldn't tell if DeMint is your Senator as you didn't have a profile.

So if you don't get a response the most likely reason would be because you live in a different state than DeMint. When they count those for or against a bill based on those that call they will only count those within their district.

If he is your Senator, his staff will probably put together a written response saying some gobble words that didn't respond to your concern.

12. Republicans LIE and assume their constituants are too stupid to know the difference.
and all too often, that assumption is correct. and yet other constituants KNOW the republicans are lying to them, but they STILL defend them.. defend the LIES.

why? because it's PARTY BEFORE COUNTRY in the republicans' world.

15. It's harder to catch Demint telling the truth than it is to catch him in a lie.
The GOP party has gone down the Nazi propaganda route.
Lie, lie some more, and lie until the end of time.

Someday, Demint won't be in the Senate.
And then his lies won't matter.
