Sen. Claire McCaskill said today that she would risk her re-election on a plan to solve the budget problems that could leave her open to political attacks.
The Missouri Democrat and Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn. proposed legislation that would mandate a cap on all federal spending – including Social Security and Medicare – over the next decade.
“I want to preserve Social Security, I want to make sure Medicare is healthy,” she said. “I honestly believe this is an issue worth going home over. So if this is it, it’s been great.”
Their goal is to lower federal spending to about 21 percent of the Gross Domestic Product – the country’s economic output. That’s what it’s been for the past 40 years. But now spending is about 25 percent of the GDP.
The bill has several Republican co-sponsors, but so far no other Democrats.
